Although my daughter is (or was) one of the notorious Bleacher Creatures, I have never been inside the Stadium, though I once changed trains there conducting some Sough Bronx adult education students to the Coney Island aquarium. I've met two: Montini in Rome, at a "private" audience in 1975 ("Holy Year") arranged for my mother and me by our bishop in Charleston. (There were actually 300 people at this "private audience.")

Papa Wojtylwa, however, I "met" (for three seconds) in Saint Lucia's Cathedral in Kotahena, Colombo, Sri Lanka, in 1995, when he came to Lanka to beatify Joseph Vaz. Some Lankan friends of mine were parishioners, and they had tickets, one of which they gave to me. John Paul was very old and frail at the time, though.

Only 300? The one I was at had more like 3,000. Or more. Also private. And the same tired speech. Read in about ten languages. Enough to make a Quaker of you. If you hadn't just spent four years in a Quaker college. Sort of Quaker, anyway.
