Film mags

I renewed my subscriptions to Film Comment magazine and Cineaste magazine today. I really like those two, but I think Cineaste is my absolute favourite film magazine. It's such an anamoly, such a product of its time that has somehow managed to survive to our present era. Cineaste started out in the 70's, when it actually wasn't that difficult to ( Read more... )

hey there. i used to subscribe to film comment. it's part of the package of a membership to the film society of lincoln center which i used to be. but here in new york city it arrives on the newsstand at least a week before it arrives in the mail! so i get it on the newsstand. i also read a canadian magazine called cinemascope which is pretty great. it's earnest, serious, entertaining. film comment's editorial content since gavin smith took over as editor is a little bit snarky for my taste. there's a lot of writing that takes that tone here in nyc. in timeoutNY for example. annoying. the reviews, essays and festival wrap-ups in film comment are fantastic however. yeah.

Yeah, Gavin Smith can get pretty snarky, but I enjoy it when he's talking about someone/something that I don't like. Surprisingly, I've never read Cinemascope. I've seen it on the stands, but the title put me off. It sounded like an industry rag to me. But when I get back to North America, I'll certainly check it out.

I am a huge fan of CinemaScope. The editor gets on my nerves some times, especially around his Cannes wrap-up when he seems to go all Armond White on the festival. However, the articles and interviews are awesome, there is no compromising their values to spotlight "big" movies unless they think the movies are good. Plus Jonathan Rosenbaum has the absolutely essential "World Cinema on DVD" column in it. I used to get Sight and Sound as well, but it got completely priced out of my range out here.

Armond White......hilarious!

I too have been thinking of the film zine. but they weird thing is this: i think we should try to do it like a real magazine. i mean start small and everything but try to do it all professional with a cool cover and maybe ads and support from organizations we like. then we can interview people and stuff. it'll be a film mag with a counter-cultural edge. i dunno, i think it could be worth a try, but it'd be helluv a lot of work. whatdoyathink?

Very intriguing......I think we should give it a go! Why not? I'm up for the work, I think the two of us can handle it better. It makes it seem like less work when there's two heads, you know?

Ok, it's time to strategize. I'll send you an email and we can start working out some details.

The bfi's Sight and Sound is the only thing I read every month. Highly recommended.

Yeah, that's a good one. But it's just a tad too expensive in North America!

It's £3.95 here, which is expensive enough as it is; thankfully, it's monthly, and less than an hour's wage for me. :)
