I'm sure Jim Carrey, being Canadian and all, was able to use the Newfoundlanders as some sort of inspiration for the sailor character. I think he was my favourite.

Jim Carrey brought the entire film down for me, probably because I read the books first. In the books Count Olaf is a legitimately frightening character, but Jim Carrey plays him as such a comical oaf that I found it impossible to consider him a threat to the children. In fact the entire film feels significantly less threatening than the books, though I still enjoyed the film. I think the end credits sequence is actually my favorite part.

I haven't read the books, so I don't know about that. I would like to, though. And I loved the end credits, too! That was probably my favourite bit, as well.
