I finally finished watching "Walkabout," episode 2x10 of Robin Hood. Having spoiled myself with reviews in various RH comms, I was prepared to be disappointed with Little John's role, but it was still quite difficult to watch.
It just doesn't make sense to me that in one ep John can tell Marian "there can only be one leader," and then be so adamantly opposed to Robin in this ep. I feel like the writers just used him as a plot device, like oh wait we need another source of OMG CONFLICT AND DISSENT, and the sense of it be damned. He felt totally out-of-character to me -- willingly bringing strangers back to camp, what?! -- and I cringed through most of his lines.
It's not that I don't think LJ and Robin clash sometimes over command decisions; that's actually something I would've liked to have seen more thoroughly explored in previous eps. But the way it was handled in this ep just did not work for me. I don't know how I'd even go about working this one into my Milliways John's history.
And oh, my, THE HAIR. It may be a silly thing to harp on, but it bothers me terribly. John's hair gets lankier, greasier and less flattering every ep. I want to know whose bright idea it was to subject Gordon Kennedy to that hair. Did they realize John had his own brand of serious cuteness in the first season, that might potentially let some of the wind out of Robin/Will/Allan/Much/Guy fangirl-sails, and say, uh, sorry Gordon, but this season you need to have INCREDIBLY HIDEOUS HAIR. Okay, probably not. But still, why, RH writers, why?!?
Anyway, in spite of the injustice done to Little John (and Djaq, while I'm thinking of it!), I was still glued to this episode. Why, you ask? The ever-growing appeal of Guy/Marian-ness. I am not ashamed to say that I swooned into a puddle of fangirl-gasmic GOO when Gisborne declared that he'd rather die at Marian's side. I am not a Robin-hater, but Richard Armitage and Lucy Griffiths have such amazing chemistry that they make the latter's scenes with Robin's actor (I can't even remember his name at the moment) pale by comparison. I CANNOT WAIT to see what transpires in the final episode, even though I suspect it will be heartbreaking in the extreme.
On a totally unrelated note, lately I'm seeing "You are about to view content that may not be appropriate for minors" in an lj-cut all over my flist. You have to click it and verify you're of legal age before viewing the post. I'm sure this was covered in an update somewhere, but I must have missed it, being that I do, in fact, live under a rock. If anyone could tell me what's up with this and how/if I can turn it off, I'd really appreciate it!
Edit: And it's fixed, with thanks to
