Thomas Edison invented the first tattoo gun. Apparently he intended it to be a device to make stencils for printing, but at some point it was re-appropriated by artists with other interests.

Found this out from a blurb from an old issue of Wired...

I.e. Originally intended for engraving, yes? (I happened to be looking up tattooing recently...)
