This bothers me

I went to see Quantum of Solace with some friends from high school over the weekend.  They were pretty big 007 fans, and they were disappointed at the overall tone of the movie and the portrayal of Bond.  I, however, was disturbed by the hotel.

Here there be spoilers... )

I noticed that one of the tanks was labeled "Hydrogen" so I imagine that was what was powering the "fuel cells." I'm not sure that makes it any better...

I thought the whole movie was too jam-packed with...everything for my tastes. ("So everyone liked the fantastic urban chase scene in Casino Royale. So, obviously, TWO scenes like that will be even better! And let's do four vehicle chases! TO THE EXTREME!")

On the subject of the hotel, yeah, I was also wondering WTF the point of this nearly-empty explosive hotel in the desert was. I can think of two potential explanations:

1) Third world countries have been known to construct extravagant boondoggles in real life.

2) They were controlling the water supply, right? So why not buy some cheap shitty land, build a fancy hotel on it, and then build a lake next to it? Voila, instant resort! It's no sillier than the basic premise.

Also, apparently Quantum can get to anyone, anywhere. i.e., Paranoid third-world dictators and guys in the middle of the desert can be executed with ease. So why can't they just murder Bond and/or M in their beds?

(Well, I guess Bond never actually slept in the movie...)

Why would you want to murder Bond and/or M when it's far more useful to stay as moles in their operations? If you murder them, you've blown your cover and someone else will take their place. If you just watch them closely, then you don't have to blow your cover until it's time to save Mr. White.
