Walking the Wall

Aug 28, 2009 19:50

I discovered earlier this week that apart from visiting one fort years ago, my husband had never ventured onto Hadrian's Wall. I was horrified - all the times I have dragged unsuspecting German guests (and the occasional American) along stretches of the wall and my own husband had never been! I saw no reason why he should escape the experience so ( Read more... )

Is Bryn new or have I just forgotten about him?

He's new. We acquired him just before Easter when he was eight months old because his old family couldn't cope with him anymore. They were going to send him to the local animal shelter, which was overcrowded at the time and so was putting animals down after a week or so. When I heard about his plight I said I'd have him - this was before I met the little bugger.

Actually, he's very sweet natured, affectionate and charming - he just has a strong mind of his own so training him is harder than it was with Murphy. He's half patterdale terrier and half springer spaniel which is a cross from hell when it comes to obedience...

So when are you going to start your job as a local tour guide? You'd be good at it you know.

Fantastic pictures as always.

Sometimes I think I'd like being a tour guide and other times I think I'd be bored having to go to the same places all the time - I like a bit of variety!

But if you ever make your way over again I'd be happy to make an exception for you. I remember you saying you tripped over Hadrian's wall once. I do hope it wasn't on this stretch because there's a drop of several hundred feet!

Oh, Anne. I want to go back so bad it isn't even funny. Hopefully you'll still be open for business in the next 5 years or so. LOL

You know you live in the most beautiful place on earth, right? Thanks for taking us along on these walkabouts. It's the only exercise I get and the only time I get to see the outdoors! :D

You flatter me, but thank you! Yes, it is a sycamore tree and it's an iconic spot on the wall - it even featured in the Kevin Costner film "Robin Hood" (which was mostly shot on the north of England).

"the warmer colors of late summer/fall" - this makes me feel unbelievably sad, as I suddenly realise that we have had no summer this year (for the third year running) - August was the second wettest on record in Cumbria and in 6 weeks we've had a foot of rain. Oh well. At least I can hope for a dry clear autumn!
