It wasn't the most interesting mission he'd ever had, stalking through town and watching for trouble. There'd been a surprising lack of that, beside the usual small crimes, and Shadow tended to ignore those. He was no policeman, and the thought was just degrading
( ... )
Ever get that feeling like you're being watched? It didn't bother Maria so much. She was constantly being watched out for by Shadow or her grandfather or one of the other scientists aboard the ARK. It was different, though. Just like everything else. Creepy and unknown and new.
And then she heard that voice. It was clear and unmistakeable in her mind. She dropped her book, startled, and whirled around. At least she didn't have to look very far.
"Shadow!"
Here, have some adorable little girl hugs from your long dead sister.
He hadn't actually expected it to be her. He still didn't actually believe it. Because it couldn't be her. It wasn't like he just hadn't seen her for a long time or something. She was dead. He'd watched her die, and he hadn't been able to do anything about it. It had been a deeply traumatic moment for the young hedgehog, and that was putting it lightly.
So here he'd been, preparing some pathetic excuse for having stopped the girl so that he could prove to himself he wasn't hallucinating and go on with his day, when she had called out his name and wrapped her arms around him. He knew it wasn't some sick joke played by an impostor, because everything was right - voice, appearance, scent, things that couldn't be duplicated.
Which meant, clearly, that he'd finally gone insane. It was bound to happen one day. Just, why did his insanity have to take this form...?
"I've been looking all over for you!" She nuzzled her face into his fur. "I knew you couldn't be far, I knew it~ Were you looking for me, too? Oh, I feel so much better now that you're around!"
Though he was reacting kind of weird. In the fact that he wasn't reacting at all. She pulled back, and her smile faltered. "Shadow? What's wrong? Aren't you happy to see me...?"
