The crackle and pop of roasted Sichuan peppercorns as I grind them in my mortar and pestle.

The next time you're in LA, remind me to show you my ridiculous pepper grinder. My mom gave it to me for Xmas a couple of years ago. It takes batteries, which not only drive the little grinding motor, but also power the little light on the bottom! It's perfect for all those times when you're grinding pepper in total darkness.

The tongue-numbness always freaks me out a little. Are you making mala sauce?

Ma Po Tofu. It's a dish I've always liked to eat, but I never attempted it before this weekend. It turned out well, but I think I will increase the chiles next time as I cooked the dish using a tamer version of this recipe: http://rasamalaysia.com/recipe-ma-po-tofu/.

The Lady Friend loves the tongue-numbness. She also discovered that she really likes the smell of the peppercorns, so I suspect I will be cooking more Sichuan from now on.
