Hello children.

Quick question - I haven't rented a phone for Japan in more than three years, does anyone know who's good these days? I need one for the mate who's coming on J-12. She only really needs it for keeping in touch with my Softbank phone, but I'm kind of looking at the this smart phone anyway. It looks like it's cheaper than Pupuru and ( Read more... )

Since I have rather meager phone needs I have no idea if this would work for her but when I go over I've been using these guys https://www.mobalnarita.com/ . The phone rental is "free" and if you opt to pay for the insurance they won't put a hold on your credit.

However you do pay for sending texts etc. Still it usually comes out being cheaper for me to do these guys than pay per day (even with the club e-mails and texting throughout the trip) but its going to depend a lot on how much she uses it.

Oh another downside is you have to pick it up in Narita but I think they might ship them to you ahead of time as well (not sure though).

HMM. I looked at them and wasn't sure if I trusted them, because in my experience, the more a website has 'free!!!' splashed all over it, the more likely it's actually going to turn out to be super expensive.

She really just needs it to contact me because we'll be spending a bit of time apart while I'm in class and it is impossible to meet up without a mobile phone. She can use mine to email home and all that. And we are flying into Narita.

HMM. Sounds promising, thank you ♥

Their website looks skivvy as hell but I gave them a try because they had offices in New York and I figured I could chew their heads off there if anything weird happened.

Using them on my last trip which was about 3 weeks cost me 2500 yen in insurance (because I didn't want the hold on my credit card) and then an additional $23.24 USD for all the e-mails. So not terrible.

They e-mail you the phone number a week before and then you pick it up at the airport and drop it off there on your way out. Its a pretty quick and simple process.
