I want off the grid.  I want to move to my dad's farm in WV and build an earthen home.  I want solar panels.  I want a huge organic garden.

Ok.  I feel better now that I've gotten that out.

grid? is that like slang for missouri?

The grid is an interconnected system for the distribution of electricity or electromagnetic signals over a wide area, especially a network of high-tension cables and power stations. Remember when there was a problem with the grid a few years back and NYC and the East Coast had that big black out? If not, do a quick goole search you'll find tons about the grid.

Do you happen to subscribe to Mother Earth News? If not, you really should.

I'm not sure I want completely off the grid, but I think it's really cool how some homes create so much solar and wind energy while still on the grid that the electricity FLOWS BACKWARDS, as in, they contribute energy to the grid rather than taking it. Then the electric company pays them!

So freakin' cool.

I've seen Mother Earth News, but haven't wanted to pay for it. Maybe if I can find a really cheap subscription to it I will, but for now, I just read it at Barnes and Noble when its on the shelf.
