What is Isaac worth?

I called Appalachian this morning to see what Isaac needed to do to withdraw there.  Almost instantly they knew who I was talking about and asked why we were wanting to withdraw.  I gave her the reasoning about Akron's scholarship.  She said well we could bump Isaac up to a full scholarship (at the moment he has a 75% award).  Then I told her about ( Read more... )

Hey, if these colleges can throw around hundreds of thousands of dollars for athletics coaches and so on, why shouldn't they be asked to do the same for the brightest students?

There's nothing wrong with -- fairly and openly -- testing the market to see what these schools are willing to do to get Isaac there as a student. If his career is likely to reflect well upon the institution when he leaves, it's well within their interests to "up the offer" to keep him.

Either way, it's a great bargaining chip to use when y'all have narrowed down your choices to make sure he's getting the best deal he can.

Ain't the free market system grand?

This is just what I sent Appalachian:

To Whom It May Concern:

Yesterday I was offered a GREAT package at the University of Akron School of Law. They offered full tuition for 3 years and a 10k stipend, so I honestly don't see how it is possible to turn this offer down. However, I do prefer Appalachian Law School because it is closer to our home in West Virginia. I also enjoy your emphasis on community service. I have heard some rumors through the grapevine about Appalachian that confuse me. What is your official ABA standing, because one of my friends said you have recently lost your appeal for full ABA accreditation because so many of your faculty have recently left. Also are there any fellowships or anything else you could offer to make my package more comparable to the University of Akron's? Thank you so much for your time and consideration. I look forward to the possibility of seeing you this fall.
