I agree. I'm not as much a fan of team sports, (I got kicked off my little league team by a "winning is everything" coach), but kids need to run and play. I'm a big supporter of unstructured play. Just throw'em outside and let the imagination take over.
Also, there's value in learning to cooperate while playing games in the structured environment of school. Children learn to follow rules, learn the correct way to kick and throw and jump so they won't hurt themselves when they're out on their own. I remember hating PE when I was in school because I was never the physical sort, but I did learn patience and tolerance for others' opinions and that's another valuable lesson.
