For the Heath Ledger comments? Yep, they were a bit off.
Mind you, Ellis has always been very harsh on suicides -- I remember a brutal piece he wrote about his one-time idol Hunter S. Thompson (inspiration for a certain Spider Jerusalem) after the man blew himself away. Has no time for suicides, thinks they're cowards, don't care about those they leave behind etc. etc.
If it turns out to be an accidental sleeping pill overdose then it's a tragedy. If it turns out to be an actual suicide, or even a half-assed will-I-or-won't-I sort of thing gone wrong, then I can sort of see where Ellis is coming from. Ledger, after all, did leave behind a 2-year-old daughter; surely he had her to live for...?
for jumping the gun as much as for what he said in his email. I can see no use for comments like that when it's not even clear what happened (or in case of his email where it happened).
Whether it turns out to be suicide or (as seems to be indicated at the moment) accidental OD, I believe no one should go out swinging the slander-stick like that before the truth is known or at least clearer. If he'd waited and it turned out to be suicide I might have merely disagreed with the severity of his tone.
From his Bad Signal dated 23 January 2008: " -- for which I should apologise, I just have a hair trigger for that kind of thing (and also for spin and crocodile tears) and don't always take the time to level out before becoming Mr Shouty -- "
