Dracula X Chronicles is great! The reviews are pretty stupid, though. One reviewer said it was not as fun as the Metroidvanias because it's "harder than NES Ghosts 'n Goblins." What the hell!
Also man, good point about DK Jr. being ahead of its time, storyline-wise. Even nowadays, games usually have very rigid good vs. evil plots, and few bother to show things from the bad guys' perspective. I never really through of DK Jr. as being deep like that, but it kind of is!
Huh. Was this a Gamefaqs review, or an actual review on a "professional" website? I use that term loosely.
I'm glad you enjoyed my thoughts on DK Jr's plot. It was a pretty cool concept for a sequel, especially for a game as early as that. I don't think we'll ever get to see Mario take the mantle of a bad guy again though.
I always liked the Official Nintendo Player's Guide's explanation of the plot. Supposedly Mario went "stark raving bonkers" when he locked Donkey Kong up. Since Super Mario Bros established him as a hero, obviously temporary insanity was the only way to explain such unheroic behavior as locking up an animal, even when said animal kidnapped his girlfriend and tried to kill him. Maybe he was suffering trauma flashbacks from Mario's Bombs Away.
