Yeah so no matter how many times its pointed out beforehand on the FC website, that this would happen, the fact that Fairmont is charging this far in advance a non refundable amount on rooms, is just WRONG. Seriously what kind of policy is this? I personally don't care, except that the money charged will accrue 2 months of interest as i wont get ( Read more... )

Uh, the Santa Clara Convention Center would've been better. And with 2000 people it's only slightly more room than we need.

There's the Hyatt, the Hilton, the Marriot and a Best Western (5 min walk), a Budget, and a 10 minute walk away there's Quality Inn. There's also a Ramada that could have a shuttle run to it like they did last year to the other hotels near the Double Tree.

They have 5000-10000 people at that convention center, I'm sure hotel space wasn't an issue.

They had a deposit at MWFF this year too, but it was refundable. I havent heard if everyone got theirs back. I think a deposit is a good idea to protect against damages, but only if the opportunity for a refund is available. Otherwise they may as well just charge another 20 bucks a night to cover it.

This coming FC the rooms are #30 more a night too. This and other reasons I gave up my room reservation before they charged people. From my understanding after talking to the reservation line 5 times tho, it's not a charge, it's an "authorization". Which may take up to one billing cycle on creditcards, and 21 days on a debit card (depending on your bank). Which really really sucks for people who used a debit card and got that on there for who knows how many days.

I do know a few people who used debit cards who didn't get the "authorization". So who knows what Fairmont's deal is.

*nod* ..I've heard this from several people now. Seems shocking they would charge so early... I think that's a pretty non-standard policy in the hotel-chain industry, to charge before people arrive. Is the Fairmont an unaffiliated hotel? arrrrgh.
