I think I'm at a place where I can safely make some confessions. Well, safely....maybe not hte right word, but I figure I'm going for stream of consciousness here, so what the hey.

As you said to bateleur (roughly, anyway!), the more one's expected to achieve things the more scary and depressing not achieving those things becomes. It's very easy to get into the habit of sticking with the old stuff and not trying. It's an achievement in itself to deliberately decide to go out there and risk change things.
