invisible cage

#01 - Ring

- Sanada narrows his eyes slightly as he walks besides Kaidoh (the theatre is showing ‘Beauty and the Beast’), scrutinizing the other boy for several minutes before asking, “Did you get your ears… pierced, Kaoru?”

#02 - Hero

- He knows that he shouldn’t have taken that shortcut, especially so late at night, but as Kaidoh looks up at the person in Rikkai Dai’s uniform that had just saved him from a gang of drunken thugs, he can’t help but wonder if he’d done the right thing.

#03 - Memory

- The cork board is covered with unpaid bills, occasional letters from both of their respective families, movie ticket stubs and a photograph of Sanada and Kaidoh, frozen in the action of snuggling on a worn-looking couch, with similar contented smiles on their faces.

#04 - Box

- Kaidoh flushed in excitement and anticipation when he hears a faint ‘Meow~’ coming from the cardboard box in Sanada’s arms.

#05 - Run

- “What are you afraid of, Kaidoh-kun?”

#06 - Hurricane

- Contrary to Sanada’s stoic and unemotional exterior, Kaidoh finds that the older man is capable of expressing a hurricane of emotions if correctly provoked.

#07 - Wings

- They simultaneously fall onto the crisp white snow, thick jackets and scarves spreads carelessly around them, and they smiles, hands linked together to create a twin of snow angels.

#08 - Cold

- As Sanada passionately pressed heated kisses against the crook of his neck, strong hands fumbling with buttons and buckles and layers of clothing, Kaidoh muses inwardly that he’s glad that his first impression of the Rikkai Dai’s vice-captain is wrong, before succumbing to the overwhelming heat.

#09 - Red

- Sanada finds Kaidoh’s tendency to blush at the most trivial of things to be oddly endearing, but he keeps it a well-hidden secret.

#10 - Drink

- Inui’s glasses glint malevolently as he strides up to a surprised Sanada in the middle of a party, holding a big glass of something green and purple and bubbly that looks potentially toxic and declares, in a creepily monotonous tone, “We need to talk, Sanada-san.”

#11 - Midnight

- Kaidoh runs his fingers through Sanada’s hair as they lie in their afterglow, marvelling at how the midnight-black strands branch erotically, like living shadows, over the pristine white pillow.

#12 - Temptation

- “Living together has many advantages, Kaoru, such as…”

#13 - View

- Sanada’s journey towards the kitchen is soon forgotten when he catches a glimpse of Kaidoh in their bedroom, fresh from the shower and is currently wearing next to nothing of any form of clothing.

#14 - Music

- Kaidoh, riffling through Sanada’s music collection in his search for something to upload into his new iPod, is certainly not expecting to come across a folder labelled ‘♥’, containing hundreds snapshots of him.

#15 - Silk

- The strip of cloth slithers over his skin like a live snake, silky cold at touch and much stronger than it looks, proven when Kaidoh tries freeing himself from the knot that ties him to the headboard, as Sanada smirks teasingly above him.

#16 - Cover

- Momoshiro finds it odd that Kaidoh, of all people in Seigaku Tennis Club, is the one chosen to be sent to Rikkai Dai for the annual Kantou Region’s tennis clubs meeting, and why Fuji had simply smiled at him when he raised that question earlier.

#17 - Promise

- Sanada wordlessly ties one end of the red string around Kaidoh’s pinkie finger, and the other end around his, as Kaidoh watches the gentle gesture with something akin to disbelief and embarrassed awe.

#18 - Dream

- Kaidoh wakes up in a bed that’s not his and a room that’s not his, and he turns to find Sanada smiling benignly at him, squishing his earlier doubt that he had just imagined their encounter last night.

#19 - Candle

- Sanada raises an eyebrow when Marui, with a cheeky grin on his face, suggests that the use of candles in bedrooms, preferably scented ones, increases urges and desires, and maybe Sanada-san would like to test that theory with his cute Bandanna-chan tonight?

#20 - Talent

- Shocked speechless, Sanada stares down at the shogi board, unable to believe that Kaidoh had just defeated him in his own element. *

#21 - Silence

- Clinks of china plates and cups echo inside their small kitchen and aside from that and the occasional brush of fingers against fingers, Sanada and Kaidoh contentedly concentrate on finishing the chore in comfortable silence.

#22 - Journey

- “Kaoru, please stop watching that flying Monkey King and come to dinner.” *

#23 - Fire

- Sanada smiles in amusement as he observes his boyfriend from the doorway of the kitchen, who is currently battling an uncooperative dead chicken and a bubbling pot of something on the stove.

#24 - Strength

- Kaidoh bows his head down in respect, tears streaming down his face as he pays his last respect to Hazue, and Sanada, respectful enough to say nothing, grasps the younger boy’s hand in his own and stands firm amidst collective shocked expression on their (Kaidoh’s mostly) friends and relatives’ faces.

#25 - Mask

- The first time that Kaidoh laughs loudly (so loud in fact that he doubles over, breathless) in Sanada’s presence is when the Seigaku regular walks into their kitchen to find the stoic vice-captain of Rikkai Dai making breakfast with a beauty mask plastered to his face.

#26 - Ice

- Sanada wraps his arm around Kaidoh, pressing their bodies close together and feels the blistering heat that seeps into his very core, slowly thawing the glacier surrounding his heart.

#27 - Fall

- ‘It feels like falling off a really tall building and knowing that it’s too late to escape’ is what Kaidoh tells Sanada, when asked what he feels about their relationship, before adding a kiss and a ‘but in a good way, of course’.

#28 - Forgotten

- Yukimura smiles as he observes Sanada conversing quietly with that bandanna-wearing Seigaku regular, wondering if he’d been demoted to second place in Sanada’s List of Important People.

#29 - Dance

- It’s slightly weird to ask Fuji for a favour (since the prodigy is creepy in his own smiling way) but Kaidoh can’t think of anyone that can dance (in a civilised sort of way) in the tennis club, and he only has two weeks until Sanada’s graduation party.

#30 - Body

- “You are mine.”

#31 - Sacred

- They share secrets, things that no one else knows but them, like how Sanada secretly enjoys back massages and how Kaidoh loves cute animals - small, seemingly-insignificant things that both cherishes when the other is not around.

#32 - Farewells

- “I won’t let you go, I promise.”

#33 - World

- Sanada doesn’t understand why it’s wrong to love a man as he overhears a couple of old ladies whispering a bit too loudly about ‘that underage homo couple in Room 24’; because surely, feelings are what important, not the gender involved… right?

#34 - Formal

- The haori is not cooperating, and Kaidoh scowls darkly, watching Sanada laughingly bats off his hand and works on the infuriating strip of fabric with practiced ease, the older boy’s already dressed in a handsome set of traditional hakama and kimono for their wedding ceremony. *

#35 - Fever

- He supposes that it’s okay to feel this hot and bothered, and if his skin feels like burning, it’s entirely not unpleasant if the cause is Sanada’s hands and tongues and breathes and silent intensity.

#36 - Laugh

- Kaidoh thought that Sanada was joking when the older man proposed to him (in the middle of their conversation about the future of Japan’s education system), but as the older man continues regarding him with a sombre, serious look he usually reserves for a difficult paperwork and/or Marui on sugar high, Kaidoh can’t decide between laughing or crying or doing both.

#37 - Lies

- “I assure you, Kaidoh-san, that I was not, as your doubles partner crudely put it, ‘ogling at your ass’, but if you’re free this evening, perhaps we can discuss it in details over dinner?”

#38 - Forever

- Sanada promises him forever, but Kaidoh knows that human’s ‘forever’ never lasts forever; Inui taught him that.

#39 - Overwhelmed

- The garden looks simply breathtaking, bathed in the perfect blend of silver moonlight and onyx midnight, and Kaidoh loses himself in its beauty as Sanada patiently guides him towards their new home.

#40 - Whisper

- The fleeting words seem like a figment of his imagination, but Kaidoh can vividly recall a whiff of hot breathe on the sensitive shell of his ear and the whispered ‘meet me tonight’ that echoes endlessly inside his mind as he stares at Sanada’s disappearing form in the crowd of enthusiastic tennis players.

#41 - Wait

- Sanada despairs as he observes the long line of people (mostly children with their parents), snaking well past the entrance door and around the corner, and wonders in exasperation if the premier of ‘Lucky the Dog’ really is that famous.

#42 - Talk

- Words are unnecessary when one understands the other more than verbal conversation will ever allow and Kaidoh nods softly to the unspoken question in Sanada’s dark, dark eyes, closing the door to the hotel room and starts divesting himself of clothes as Sanada does the same.

#43 - Search

- The policewoman calmly informs him with cold efficiency that Kaidoh Kaoru-san is still missing and yes, they’re doing everything they can to find him but don’t you know that one out of three teenagers in Japan today runs away from home because of various reasons, and it’s really bothersome to try and find someone who doesn’t want to be found?

#44 - Hope

- “Mom, Dad, this is Sanada Genichirou, my… boyfriend.”

#45 - Eclipse

- Their first conversation is when Sanada and Kaidoh reach for the last book on astronomy on the bookshelf at the same time, both withdrawing their hands when they realizes the existence of the other, and apologizes in their respective quiet manners, before parting ways.

#46 - Gravity

- It’s incredible how they seem to effortlessly gravitate towards each other, and how they’re both still densely unaware of the invisible force between them; perhaps a truck load of apples are in order. *

#47 - Highway

- Sanada vows that he shall never, never ever allows Kaidoh to take over the steering wheel as he hangs onto the side of the passenger seat for dear life, their car barrelling ahead in a speed unfit for those who had egg sandwiches for lunch.

#48 - Unknown

- The thin scar runs from the base of Kaidoh’s left thigh to the underside of his knee and Sanada frowns thoughtfully, contemplating that this must be one of the things that they don’t talk about from the pained look on Kaidoh’s face when the younger boy realizes that Sanada had discovered his ‘little secret’.

#49 - Lock

- “Sanada Genichirou, you’re under arrest for the second degree murder of Kaidoh Kaoru. You are to remain silent as everything that you said will be used against you-”

#50 - Breathe

- The action makes him feel like drowning, like sand is streaming into his blood vessels instead of air, like oxygen is being sucked out of his lungs, but Kaidoh feels worse, much worse when Sanada stops kissing him.

* # 20 : Shogi is the Japanese version of chess.
* # 22 : The ‘Monkey King’ refers to the famous ‘Journey to the West’.
* # 34 : Haori, hakama and kimono are traditional Japanese clothes.
* # 46 : The apples refer to how Sir Isaac Newton discovered the existence of gravity.
