Character

Name: Rune Walsh
Fandom: Phantasy Star IV
Gender: Male
Age: Listed as unknown, he can’t be much older than mid twenties though
Time Period: Post game
Wing Color: Very pale blue, so pale that it is nearly white
History: (Unfortunately, I could not find a source that actually gave a decent summary of either the game’s plot, or on this character, so I do apologize in advance for the serious tl;dr that this will be, and will provide this nice link to the wiki article to help with at least the basics on the canon since so few know it)

Not much is really said about Rune, he’s a secretive bastard, but through the course of the game, we do indeed get a few tidbits, well minus his age.

It is a known fact that Rune was actually born on Dezolis, the third planet in the Algo Solar System, a planet that is covered in snow and ice. Though it is said only the highest ranking of the Espers can go within the mansion, he’s obviously one of the highest ranked there is. So he probably spent a great deal of his childhood around there until about the age of 15.

Nothing is really stated about what he did until then, so for the sake of assumption, he likely was training and being a somewhat normal kid. Of course, he wasn’t exactly normal for an Esper.

At the age of 15 he was chosen to take the place as the fifth generation Lutz and gained the memories of their leader who had lived a thousand years ago and had been around two thousand years ago when Alis Landale defeated Lassic. (a quick note here, in the original game, there is a translation error on this, Lutz is somehow renamed Noah for some strange reason. According to information found, it is indeed Lutz who traveled with Alis, so Rune would indeed know of the events of PSI, and even some from PSII since Lutz did appear in that game too.).

At this point, Rune learns about the entity that endangers the Algo Solar System, Dark Force. Dark Force is a piece of an entity called the Profound Darkness which is a personification of evil that had been sealed away when Algo was created. The seal was undone in the first game by Lassic and since then every thousand years Dark Force would threaten the world. Lutz knew that the espers were needed to aid the hero who would then defeat this being, and he made sure that someone would hold that knowledge each time and be able to find the hero. Well, Rune was the lucky person.

The funny thing is, this also makes him the nominal leader of the esper people. Rune has a major hatred for formalities, so this is a rather amusing fact. Thankfully, since his main duty is to seek out Dark Force, and the espers are rather used to Lutz not being around, he didn’t need to spend much time as the leader. There were elders who handled things in his absence.

So Rune spends the next few years traveling between the planets (this is another thing that requires a slight note, my interpretation of how he does this is that he has the memories of another who has been there, the teleportation spell, Ryuka requires having visited there before, so he uses the memories to make it work). When he goes to Motavia, he eventually meets up with the hunters, realizing that those who go out and deal with the problems of the planet are likely to know what he needs to know. Through this he meets a man named Galf who is raising a young orphan named Alys Brangwin. Rune especially takes a liking to Alys. She’s around his age and they have a great deal in common. He definitely could tell she would be very important in the future, she was definitely skilled enough that she was very likely the one who would come across some of the first signs, either that or Galf would. He remains with them for four years in total. He had to have learned a great deal about fighting from the pair, but truly, what he gained from this was that he truly did come to care for Alys. Through them he meets many others on Motavia which does end up helping him later. The most important of these happens to be the information monger of Tonoe, Grandfather Dorin, since he left a rather important item with the Motavian.

At this point, it isn’t as known what he did the next few years between when he left Alys and when he eventually met up with her again along with the boy she raised, Chaz. It is assumed he traveled the world more looking for signs of Dark Force, and when he comes across Alys and Chaz, he has started to hear things that were pointing in that direction, and as he had imagined, Alys did indeed stumble upon it too. A man named Zio was causing many problems, and it was just strange enough that it could well be related to Dark Force.

He joins them for a time because between what she reported to him, and what he had found himself, he knew the time was coming soon and he had to go retrieve and item. Since she was headed to the same place as him, he invited himself to join them, which Chaz did not appreciate, since Rune nicknamed him “Shorty” right off (well, Chaz is a bit short for a guy at 5’7, even Alys is taller than he is.).

But truthfully, he had a feeling that Chaz would be important later, because he knew Alys, and knew she wouldn’t spend the time to train someone who wasn’t worth her time. They traveled to the town of Tonoe, and before he left, Rune did warn them not to go after Zio on their own. He wanted to make sure that if they were going to go after the man, that he would be there to make sure they both were safe.

Of course, he should have known Alys wouldn’t listen to him. He meets up with Chaz again later and finds out that they had not heeded his warning after all, and Alys was in serious trouble. Chaz had gone through a great deal of trouble just to even locate Rune because Alys asked him to.

The moment Chaz told him what happened, he knew that he had been right, and that there was truly little he could do for Alys. Not even his own powers would be enough. The best he could do is to make sure that he could defeat Zio, and so he asked Chaz to accompany him while he sought out the item he had left in the tower Chaz found him in.

After they got the item, which was a very special wand that could neutralize the barriers Zio put up, along with ensure the man could even be harmed, he knew Alys had taken a turn for the worse and they quickly returned. Of course, all he could do then was promise to take care of Chaz.

And he did keep his promises. Chaz definitely was a special young man, and he would only confirm his initial thought about the boy if he kept an eye on him in Alys’ place.

They did defeat Zio, and found out that Zio was a puppet to Dark Force. Of course, that wasn’t the end of their adventure, they still did have to deal with that pesky personification of evil. Through the android they had found in Zio’s Caslte, Demi, they had an idea where to search and she provided them with a spaceship to get there.

Well, they get to the artifical satellite Demi told them to go to and only find another android named Wren who informs them of where the problem actually is. Well, they eventually get there, after crashing the spaceship onto a temple on Dezolis (which Chaz blames on Rune while he’s freaking out), taking a bit of a side jaunt to get a new spaceship and meeting an annoying wisecracking priest named Raja. They defeat Dark Force.

Of course, the journey still isn’t over. It seems that there are still problems. During their short jaunt on Dezolis, they found the climate there had been affected, and with Dark Force’s defeat at the artifical satellite, Kuran, that should have been resolved. Well, Raja of course has to butt in and give his theory on it (which actually turns out to be right). So they have to go investigate matters more.

Of course, Raja ends up falling ill in a town that is stricken with a weird disease that turns out to be caused by Dark Force. The place Raja claimed was the cause of the climate issues is near this town. He’s left in the care of the espers who have come to help the village, and the group leaves for the place Raja spoke of at the request of the leader of the esper group since one of their members took off for the tower. Well, this tower is protected by a bunch of carnivorous trees that pretty much will not die.

Well, at this point, Rune knows he’s in for it. They do rescue the girl who is a bit too daring for her own good. Of course, she suggests that they go seek out the help of the esper leader, Lutz. She goes on and on about how wonderful of a man Lutz is and takes them to Esper Mansion.

Of course, Kyra fails to gain entrance to where Lutz supposedly is, and well, Rune realizes now, his secret is going to get out. He gains them entry to the Inner Sanctum, which surprises Kyra, since she didn’t even know who he was, much less that he was important enough to be able to gain entrance to a place she was refused.

But it doesn’t end there, she finds out that this wonderful leader she spoke of was actually Rune. Needless to say, the whole party is shocked (well, except Wren who really didn’t believe the story that a man could live for two thousand years, but you really can’t shock an android), and Kyra is horrified to say the least. Chaz is quite surprised, since Rune comes out and explains that Chaz is the one he chose to defeat Dark Force this time.

Kyra is still quite horrified, and well Rune tries to apologize for not being what she thought he would be. That fails miserably.

Well, the adventure continues with a little side jaunt to obtain an item to deal with the carnivorous trees that had thought Kyra would make a yummy snack earlier. They get through the tower and defeat Dark Force again. The snowstorms stop and all the people in Meese are cured of the illness. Kyra leaves them since that matter was dealt with.

Well, things still aren’t over, though we are getting closer now. Unfortunately while rhey were all off dealing with this matter, a very important site to the Dezolisians is burned down. The few survivors tell the party that they have to defeat another entity called the Profound Darkness, or this will not end.

To sum the next bit up quickly, they travel to an unknown 4th planet after defeating Dark Force yet again and getting an item to lead them to this fourth planet. They prove themselves worthy of being able to defeat the Profound Darkness by those on this planet. At this point, they are pretty much ready to go save the world at last, but Chaz finally decides to have second thoughts. Really, took him long enough. Wasn’t defeating Dark Force three times enough already to show he’s worthy?

Well, Rune isn’t going to put up with this. He knows Chaz is worthy, so instead he takes the boy back to Esper Mansion to give him a nifty item,. The Elysdeon. Chaz gets to speak with all the previous heroes and now finally feels he can do it.

So they go and defeat the big bad evil and the world is saved, and of course everyone goes back to their homes, well, except for Rune, he decides to continue traveling as he claims to finish his training, and after they all say their goodbyes is when he will end up in Luceti.

Personality:

Rune is definitely far from a simple man, in fact he has a few different faces he will show to people that he meets, all depending on his own feelings towards the person and what he is actually up to at the time.

Normally, he shows an air of arrogance and vanity. He definitely appears to think very highly of at least his abilities, along with his knowledge. This arrogance however is actually a front for Rune to hide behind. If he appears open, honest, and forthright, to the point of almost being insulting, people don’t tend to delve deeper, which suits him well, because there are many things he can’t say about himself.

The interesting thing is, he only actually acts this way to people he actually seems to like or respect. If he doesn’t, he’d completely ignore them. If someone were to actually read further into his insulting comments, they are meant to either gain an amusing reaction, or even to give a veiled compliment.

But truly, all of this is meant to hide many things. There is the obvious that he needs to hide who he is and be able to pass himself off as a Parmanian. In his own world, Espers aren’t always thought of highly and can be in great danger, so he needs to keep that to himself for his own safety, and there is also the fact that even in places where his position would gain him respect, he doesn’t want it, he wants to be treated like a normal person. But there is more than just that, because Rune is quite capable of getting out of trouble and defending himself. What he is truly hiding is the fact that he actually lacks confidence in himself. True, he has great abilities, but he knows he pales in comparison to his predecessors. That and he will always have to live with the knowledge that he had been unable to save his closest friend, and in his eyes, Alys died because he hadn’t done what he should have and he could have protected her, had he been better, or had he stayed with her.

True, in the end things worked out, but he will always hold that regret.

However, interestingly enough, once he gains some closeness to someone and respect them, he actually tends to become far kinder overall. He may still tease, but that is much more good natured teasing among friends. But even when he gains some closeness to someone, he still doesn't talk much about himself besides what he openly shows. For instance, he has no problem showing off true magic to others and even saying what it is, but to say who he really is, that took a great deal before he came out and said it. Overall, he is very honest and forthright if asked a direct question, the trick is asking him the right questions.

Strengths:

- He is definitely skilled with magic and techniques. His array of skills and techniques have a very interesting range too. Mostly attack, but there is some support types, teleportation and even one healing (he’s actually the first person to learn the resurrection tech, but yet has no other healing skills)
- He has some semblance of innate telepathic skill. He is able to sense some things, like the presence of the Black Energy Wave, some of how people are feeling and he was also able to sense that Alys had worsened in the game.
- He’s very cool, calm and confident. In some ways he is almost vain and showy. He doesn’t let things bother him outwardly, instead hiding behind a front of snark and arrogance even when things get bad. About the closest to being upset anyone would see from him is absolute silence.
- He’s pretty friendly and honest overall. Once people get past his initial attitude, he is actually quite likeable and will actually be honest. He may be somewhat secretive, but if asked the right questions, he will be very straightforward about it. For instance, when he used magic to open up a cave and his group asked about it, he told them flat out, it was true magic. That’s rare enough in his world that telling of it marks him as unusual, but not like they’d know enough to figure it out.
- Due to the fact that he has the will and memories of Lutz, he tends to show knowledge and wisdom far beyond his years. Kind of hard not to when you have the memories of a guy who lived a thousand years. He definitely has a huge knowledge of the history of the Algo Solar System.

Weaknesses:

- Obviously being a magic user, he is a pathetic fighter.
- His attitude at times can really put people off. Especially if they find out who he actually is.
- Because he’s a very secretive type of person, he doesn’t tend to get close to people also. There are exceptions, of course, Alys being the primary one, since she was like him in many ways.

Samples

First Person: Request Q&A. Seriously, I just seem to pick characters who don't speak unless spoken to.

Third Person: Normally, the sight of trees wouldn't be so strange and shocking, but to Rune, it most definitely was.

Why? Because he had never actually seen a forest in his own memory before, not like this at least. About the only thing close was forests covered in snow. But here, it was warm, and pleasant, and the forest was green and full of life.

Obviously, he wasn't counting his experience with a forest of carnivorous trees. That was not something he wished to have a repeat of ever.

He didn't really care if he looked strange in doing so; he actually found it enjoyable to just look at the trees because it was such a new experience for him. To him it was fascinating how tall they were, and how the leaves could shroud out the view of the sky, how so many could grow in one area. The only place he could view this sort of thing was in memories of Palma, memories that were not his own. Even looking at those memories, he knew this was not any place he had been to.

And for someone who traveled as much as he did, places he had not been to could not exist, could they?

He stood up so he could get a better view of things and then he noticed that something was missing. Great, so not only was he in a strange place, but he was also missing his clothes. That and his back was rather sore. What had happened to him that brought him here, and left him unconscious?

He put a hand on his back to get a better idea of what was causing the soreness. He expected to feel some sort of a wound and was astonished to say the least to discover a new addition to his back, wings.

This was definitely not a good thing at all. Still, it wasn’t like him to panic, he knew it was always best to remain calm, look at the situation and learn what you can of it, then compare it to what you do know.

That was where the true problem was, it didn’t compare to anything he did know. He could only see what it was not. That just unnerved him, even in their journey there was at least some familiar to the strange places they found. At least there was one thing he could note, there was no sense of the Black Energy Wave, which was good. They defeated the Profound Darkness, there should be no more reappearances of their great enemy.

No, whatever this was, it was completely new to him. Whether it was good or bad, remained to be seen, but he knew he would definitely have to be careful no matter what.
