The second single from SLA was going to be "My Reply" (which would've been a terrible choice), but KROQ in LA started spinning "The Boys of Summer". It started to take off, and the band was told that if they didn't release it as the single, then KROQ would stop spinning the band, and consequently every alternative rock station in the US wouldn't've picked them up, since KROQ is the trendsetter for all of those stations. So the band pretty much had no choice but to do it.
They had recorded it as a tribute to Kris' grandmother, for the song brings him back to the times he spent with her as a kid before she passed away.
