Things are looking confusingly rosy...

So it's 5:15 and I am half-way done writing a paper for my Gravestones class. I'm having a hard time feeling pressured; I have a vague enough idea of what I want to say. I feel like this paper will write itself and that I really don't need to worry about it. However, I started writing it at around 10... fell asleep for a bit, continued around 12:15 ( Read more... )

You should take Southern African History, for that class promises to be incredibly cool.

It's actually the class I'm most excited about. I tried to build my schedule around it... which is a problem, because currently I'm signed up for four classes from 9 to 1 on Monday, Wednesday and Friday. And then a random fifth on Tuesdays and Thursdays.

> I feel like I should take this class but only really for the sole reason that it's a seminar.

For those who don't go to Brown, what's the specialness about seminars?

Um... ok. So they rave about seminars, because apparently they give you the chance to work in a very small class setting and pursue subject matter that would not normally be taught in a class (for instance, one psychology seminar was called "Animal Minds," another was about the psychological basis of music). There are seminars in pretty much every discipline, though some of them sound pretty boring. I can see how a physics seminar would give freshmen the chance to have a small physics class and learn in a different manner (because I think a typical basic physics lecture is around 200 people), but an English one is pretty close to how an English course is taught... I don't know, I'll see how it is.
Really, I don't know exactly what's so special about seminars other than that everyone who's taking one raves about them.

Okay, this entry merited a comment. Though now you'll probably know who I am.

TAKE THE FIRST YEAR SEMINAR BECAUSE I'M IN IT. PLEAAAASE, OR ELSE THERE WON'T BE ANY OTHER GUYS IN THAT CLASS. And you're in it. And I'm in it.
But if you don't like it, sit in on the EL0063 S06 and fight your way into it, like I did for my seminar this year. I don't think you'd like a class on women's writing...even though I'm excited about Austen and Bronte. =P

Also, take Math 18 S02 with Banchoff, I Hour. Because I'm doing that, and everyone says you have to take a class with him even though it's difficult.
And Orgo, Chem 35 S02 with Zimmt (I think?), H Hour. Because I'm in it, and Zimmt is apparently amazing. I wrote the Critical Review for chem. =P Yes. And ta-da, you're in (at least) two of my courses next semester! Congratulations.

Hey man. You're in adgeman80, magicmice, and duckonbike's gravestones class. I don't know why I decided to say that. But yeah. Ok. Nevermind.

Ummmmm...Hi. I was initially going to be all like, "Cool you're in a class with some friends of mine!" but I didn't think it was going to be this anti-climactic.

Hahahaha I know what you mean, that's definitely happened to me before.
Cool. I know who the first two are but we've never really spoken.

Yay for changing roommates!! I'm glad Res Life treated you well; I've heard some horror stories.

As for classes, Psych 30 is with Professor Hayden, who is FANTASTIC -- seriously, I have abnormal psych with him this semester, and it's my favorite class. I think he's the only professor who's simultaneously a clinical practitioner, so he can actually tell us stories from his personal experiences, and it's awesome.

I'm in the seminar on women's writing too. Don't switch! :)

(Currently I'm hoping to take the seminar, French 151, The History of American School Reform, and... comp lit Fiction of Relationship? Perceptions of Mental Illness? Adolescent Psychology? Argh! There are too many interesting classes!)

Yeah I hear Hayden is awesome, but I also REALLY want to take the Southern African history course and I'm afraid it might come down to psych or history and I can't decide which...

If I don't get into English 18, I think I will take the seminar.

The roommate thing is so awesome... yay...
