Star System
Chapter 01

It was September but the weather was so hot that one would think it was still summer. Of course that meant that the humidity and the heat in Seoul were unbearable. The calendar marked the date: September the 14th.

Inside a recording studio in Kangnam a young girl was singing with the accompaniment of her guitar. Her sweet voice blended with the guitar melody and everyone in the studio was listening, mesmerized. When the song ended the producer exclaimed: “That was superb Minsook!”

The girl put down her guitar and bowed slightly. Her cheeks were red and made her seem even cuter than she was. She exited the recording booth and asked for some water. As she was drinking, she was approached by a good-looking gentleman in his early forties.

“Good job Minsook. I hope we can schedule your debut soon.” he told her.

The girl, whose name was obviously Minsook, bowed again shyly.

“Mr. President…” she said. “But I still…”

“Yes, I know. Dr. Yoo told me. You still have a long way to go. But she also told me that you are improving. Compared to when you started going…”

“Ah, yes…” Minsook didn’t really know what to say. When confronted with the matters of her debut she would feel lost.

That was Minsook, an 18-year-old trainee of D&L Entertainment. She was a really talented girl who was born in Korea but was raised in the United States since she was 5 years old. The child of a single mother, 3 years ago she had auditioned for D&L, a then relatively new Korean Entertainment company and she passed. She then moved to Seoul leaving her mother behind in the States.

With her talent in singing, playing the guitar and songwriting one would think that she would have debuted already. Her raw talent didn’t need much training. However, Minsook had a serious problem that prevented her from debuting as an official singer.

It happened just one year after her winning audition. D&L had just debuted their first artist, a 3-member girl group named LadyS and held a showcase for them. The trainees at the company were assigned to perform at the showcase to show their potential and talent. Actually, Minsook was scheduled to debut right after LadyS so this showcase meant a lot to her and the company. She had written a great song and she had practiced over & over to perfect her performance.

The time came for her to come up to the stage… Everyone was anticipating her. Clutching her guitar that was hanging from her shoulder she went up. Blinding flashes and cheers surrounded her. And then… it happened. Her heart started racing, her forehead started sweating and her legs gave way. The 16-year-old girl fell down. The people in the audience were flustered. What happened? What was wrong? The president of D&L, Mr. Park Yoonseong hurried over to her and helped her stand himself.

“Are you ok?” he asked with a worried voice.

That was how Minsook discovered that she had stage fright. She couldn’t handle going out and facing audiences. That was so strange! When she was in the US she and her best friend used to give performances in the street and she was not afraid then. What was the cause of her fear? She didn’t know.

Needless to say, that incident prevented her proper debut. Any other company would have dropped her on the spot. However President Park thought that it was a waste to abandon such a talent so he kept her as a trainee. He promised that he would help her debut and we went to great lengths to ensure that this would happen. He even provided her with psychological help to assist her in overcoming her fear. In Korea going to psychologist may seem like something that would leave a social stigma but for American-raised Minsook that was not an issue. She would be forever grateful to her caring president and she promised not to let him down.

Back in the time our story takes place, Minsook exited the recording studio. Those test recordings of her new songs gave her a great peace of mind. She was born to sing. Now she only needed to prove it to the world. But how long it would take her to make the step?

Walking down the corridor she met a familiar face. Her face became immediately red and she raised her hand to greet him.

“Joongho oppa… Hi…” she said.

The familiar face, a tall and very handsome boy, greeted her back.

“Minsook! I heard that you were recording today! How was it?” he asked.

“Good I suppose.” she said with her eyes lowered. “I am satisfied with the results but maybe I need to improve in some parts…”

“If it’s your song I’m sure it does not need any improvements.” said the boy and put his hand on her head to mess her hair. “Our little Minsook is too talented!” he exclaimed.

Minsook got upset and tried to break free from him. She turned around and made a funny face.

“Why are you here oppa?” she asked. “I thought you finished with the recordings of the new single.”

“Ah yes. But they told me my part was lacking so I have to re-record.” he said and crossed his hands. “The one who needs to improve is me as it seems!”

After saying that he smiled heartily and Minsook felt her own heart beating faster and faster.

“Well, I hope you do well this time oppa! Fighting!” she said and clenched her fist in front of her. The boy did the same and they parted ways.

As soon as she was out of his sight Minsook exhaled loudly. It felt as if she was holding her breath all this time. Her heart still hadn’t calmed down.

“What’s wrong with you Minsook? Stop acting like this whenever you’re alone together!! He just sees you as a dongsaeng.” she said to herself. But she hoped it’s wasn’t like this…

The boy that crossed her path was Kang Joongho, the 20-year-old leader of the 6 member rookie boygroup Glacier. They had made their debut about half a year ago and they were the most popular of the rookie groups of that period. Their debut song, Icy Heart, was one of the most played songs for the first half of the year as well. People called them “Icy Sensations” and their fanclub kept increasing in numbers.

For Minsook, Glacier were her close friends since her first trainee days. Joongho in particular, always cared for her and helped her adjust to the Korean way of life. For that, Minsook was more than grateful and, before she knew it, she had started developing feelings for him. However it was clear that Joongho would never look at her that way. For him, she was like a cute sister. But her heart could not be changed so she continued to have her one-sided crush on him…

While Minsook was reminiscing her first days with Joongho, her cell phone rang. She looked at the caller and smiled broadly. It was her best friend from America. She picked it up and spoke in Korean.

“Hello! Alicia?”

The voice from the other side answered her in perfect Korean. “Minsook! I got good and bad news!”

“Bad news first.”

“I broke up with Jason.”

“What? Why?”

“He was cheating on me with that girl that works part time at Luis’ Burger!! You remember? The one I told you about?”

“Ah her?”

“Yes… But, really, I expected it! He was an asshole!”

“He was… And the good news?”

“The university accepted me! In April I’ll start attending! So in March, I am moving to Seoul!!”

“Really? Really really?”

“Yes! Baby I am coming!” that line was spoken in English and followed by a whistle.

Minsook felt really happy at that moment. She hadn’t seen her friend Alicia in 3 years and now they would be together almost every day! She wasn’t able to contain her joy and she started cheering loudly.

“Go to your dorm now and open Skype! I need to chat with you in detail. I am so happy that I don’t even care about the breakup!” said Alicia and hanged the phone.

Minsook rushed over to her dorm to call her friend on the Internet.
