Originally, the people was small, and insignificant, and... a tiny island fishing community. But then most of the resources they needed to sustain their burgeoning population evaporated. Many made their way overland, where, by virtue of their inquisitive and hardworking nature, they suceeded in overrunning the economy. By borrowing terms from the surrounding peoples, they came into power with a language half their own. Their island kin's language maintain many of the origins of this adapted language.

Or something. Make it work! ^^;

That scenario works surprisingly well. It fits really well with the vague "outsider" status they already had, too. Thanks!

(And now I'm left wondering why I didn't think of it, because it seems so obvious. Haha.)
