I try to update my lj at least once a month for that reason. I find I update more when I'm unhappy or stressed, so it's not entirely a balanced record of my past, as you mentioned, but it's enough and I do like being able to go back and reread entries. I've taken to updating privately (I know anything posted to the internet can not really be considered private, but it's enough) and then I can go back and while reading what I posted publicly and the resulting comments from people, also read the interspersed private entries.
