Critique of Chrono Cross. I didn't even get to see Serge's ass.

My summer critique class (Game Design Criticism and Analysis) has gotten me into a funny habit of, well, critiquing whatever old game I happen to be playing. This will in no way be that damned formal. It literally takes me months, if not years, to get around to completing most games if I complete them at all, and it doesn't help when they're ( Read more... )

I suppose I'm more forgiving of mechanics if the storyline is intriguing enough. The presentation of this game was like butter (oh wow, I just remembered that was the tag line of the American Chrono Trigger tv spot) but I suppose it was a big mish mosh of a lot of things. I forget if I the version I played was greatest hits or not but I did complete the game with my ex around 2003 or so. Satisfying storyline and New Game+ is still in there. For battles I probably was just hitting the confirm button over and over.

Also of note, I was playing on a dying old TV so we had the proper color in the bottom third of the screen and then a band of red for the middle and green on top or something like that. The game we played after was FFIX (and by this point we decided to spare our retinas and play completely in black and white). For some reason the styles/presentation seemed to mesh well to me between those two games (though I can't speak for the color).

Sorry it takes me weeks to reply to anything at all LOL!

We also have FFIX which I played like the first 2 minutes of, and I agree that the style matches CC very well and not just from the prerender bg with simple poly characters - I really dig the hand painted look for backgrounds but think that it can make iteration difficult.

Didn't know CT had a tv spot! Can't be nearly as amazing as all the Zelda promos over the years - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=u3THavMxNDE
