last quarter i was in a gender and society class, and i found the class's conversation on sex work to be a disheartening view of young adults' opinions concerning prostitution. i was THE ONLY one who spoke against it. the professor was giving us extremely biased information. the video we watched in class took the cake. it was a selection of interviews with prostitutes in which they claimed, just like this girl, that they were "empowering women everywhere ( ... )

For every woman who writes a book on feminism, there are at least a thousand who don't need or want to be spoken for. Women trade sex for things - rent, fur coats, military secrets, education, sparkly things, credit lines, ad infinitum. Nothing new or empowering there. Now, if women everywhere boycotted sex until all oil burning machines were changed over to electric, we'd be in the solar age in less than a month, and if they unilaterally boycotted sex whenever war broke out, there would be no war - that's empowerment.
