Sooooo...I wonder how many people actually stayed up until midnight to buy a book. A book that will still be in distribution today. Every other Harry Potter release, I've walked into Costco the next day and found 50 or so copies at wholesale warehouse prices. I wonder why we go with fads...the books up until 5 were great. I will be the first ( Read more... )

Got me. You've actually read Harry Potter books, which is more than I've done and the last (and only) Robert Jordan book I read was a Conan novel in high school.

Nice to hear your voice, it means you're well:) I have a coworker that took his kids to BN at ten p.m. for the wait. I've never waited for anything in my life; if there's going to be a line I just show up late. There's nothing that important that I'd waste time in order to waste more later. I'm sure they're great books, and if they are, they'll be great a few years from now too lol.

I've been pulled pretty tight for time. I've been reading but rarely commenting, and definitely not posting.:/

I'm going to get worse, as I've decided recently to start working on a Masters. But, I do miss interacting with you guys.

The thing that gets me, is that the Harry Potter series is a KIDS SERIES. The books are written for kids. They aren't written in a voice for adults.

So all the hype + criticisms from adult just sorta makes me go... O.o

It seems everyone has forgotten this is a series that was written to be aimed at kids.

Don't get me wrong. I enjoy some kids books. But the stories and plots are always far more simple and transparent than I'll find in books from say... Bruce Sterling, who I'm currently reading for myself.

As for Robert Jordan, I don't think the much of the general public knows who he is. But everyone knows who JK Rowling is due to both the hype and controversy (book banings anyone?)surrounding Harry Potter. I haven't heard of middle schools trying to ban Robert Jordan books.

I have to disagree with one thing. I think that the first three books are written towards kids, but I think by the fourth book she realizes kids aren't her only audience and they start to get a lot wordier and lose a lot of the simple charm of the first three. Now, they are mostly teen/adult books.:/
