So, having whinged about being stressed and overtired and getting no time to relax, I spent Sunday running D&D for the gang and thus relaxing. And I'm glad I did. If only I could play D&D every day. Which I pretty much did in my very early 20s, come to think of it. Oh, the memories.

FWIW, I really enjoyed the session, and found the individual skill rolls a little more... (visceral? Immediate?) than a skill challenge.

My only worry in these kinds of sessions is pulling too much focus, as I see them firmly in the wheelhouse of other characters...

(which is not to say that I don't enjoy pointing out more bloody-minded solutions to problems...)

Yeah, the skill challenge issue is that it abstracts and amalgamates skill checks into a final result, while individual skill checks produce immediate and individual results. The tricky part (for me) is working out which approach is right for a given situation.

And Ballast has strong non-combat skills, although admittedly they still tend to be physical.

At some point I'll need to start taking appropriate non-physical skills to start tooling up for Crime Lord. :-)
