Well, we left Fort Lauderdale yesterday and are heading across the Atlantic with a load of 20, count ‘em, 20 children. Maybe 19. One has not been seen yet. Of those, there are only about 11 we’ll be seeing, probably all the time since, hey, what else it there to do?
Quiet and good times for the youth team which reduced from 11 down to just 5 of us plus super manager, Debs. Who assassinated me this morning in the mess by sprinkling water on me in front of the bewildered Cruise Director. Bleah :-P Time for fun and games.
The reduction in staff required me to change rooms but no loss there. I’m now sharing with Christy, a wonderful woman from Texas, laid back and lovable, in a room with both beds on the floor. I’m loving it. I was going to train and work out with her and Debs this afternoon but wound up taking a nap.
We live on Deck 2 and work up on Deck 15, twelve flights of stairs that I’ve been making the effort to climb at least once a day. (Yes, I know 15 - 2 doesn’t = 12, but deck 13 is missing. If you see it, send it home.) Debs and Christy were seen running them as I napped. Being a new ship, we actually have a lovely crew gym with new, working equipment instead of the old stuff left over from the spa upstairs.
My last chance for US shopping yesterday was spent at the Walgreen’s and Office Depot procuring extra personal care items, a Britta water pitcher, watercolor pencils and what-not. Can’t have too much what-not.
Little happinesses:
When Mackie left, she gave me her spare pillow. YAY.
I found the laundry room is just down the hall and managed to time it right to do a load of wash. YAY.
Got my uniform trousers hemmed and they fit well. YAY.
The way the ship is built, we’re never around guests, even in the evening, so all the counselors can wear the comfy cargo pants and polo shirts all the time. YAY
Got to eat in the Chinese specialty restaurant last night (embark night, no guests there at all, no kids for dinner party, so the whole team could be there) YAY
My friends celebrated me for my birthday last week in the staff bar and the Philippino karaoke singers all serenaded me with sappy love ballads. Um, Yay.
I painted my toenails metallic teal in honor of turning 52. YAY.
Really. It’s the little things.
