Who: Deidara and Orihime
Where: Their apartment and then the hospital
When: Tuesday afternoon
Warnings: drugs and angst
Deidara had been clean for over a week but because he was using drugs heavily before he went cold turkey it just made feel sick. Nightmares hunted him while he slept and he was sure that had kept Orihime up, so he moved to the other bedroom so that at least she could sleep. Restlessness and just feeling like he was suffering from the worse flu in history made it even more tempting to fall off the wagon.
It was in the early afternoon when Deidara finally gave in to the urges. He had remembered that he had some drugs, that weren't escatacy, hiden in one of his drawers. He had forgotten to tell Orihime about them, so they should still be there. She was currently at school so she shouldn't be back for a while. He got out of bed and made his way over to the master bedroom. Fuzzball, who rarely left his side for the past week, followed close behind him, mewing softly. He opened the drawer and started going through it to find the the bottle of pills. After he finally found them and quickly opened the bottle with shaking hands. He didn't know how many pills he took, nor did he care. He just wanted the feeling of being sick to go away. He had dry swolled the pills, and then sat on the bed, waiting for them to take effect. The next thing that happened was that everything went black, and he had this strange floating sensation. All that he heard was a cat meowing.
"Hey, Dei, I'm home!" Orihime called as she opened the door. She put her school bag down. "Oh! I picked up some brocures today! It's for some local rehab centers. I wanted you to look at them." She suddenly paused when she didn't hear any type ofreaction. "Dei? Deidara?" Perhaps he was asleep. ...She walked over to the room he'd been sleeping in and noticed he wasn't there. Then she walked into their room. "Hey..Dei..."
Deidara didn't respond at all. He was half laying on the bed some of the pills still in his hand. His skin was pale looking and his breathing shallow. Beside him was the kitten, pawing at his arm trying to get a reaction as well.
She noticed the pills and started to freak, but calmed herself enough to go towards him. "Dei..Dei! Oh god..." She shook him a bit. This was not good. Quickly she picked up the phone and called for an ambulance. Upon hanging up the phone, she removed the bottle from his hand and took him into her arms.
Within minutes the ambulance arrived at the apartment building. Another tendant let them in and they rushed up to Deidara and Orihime's apartment with a stretcher. Finding the right apartment number they knocked on the door.
Orihime left him for a moment to run to the door. "In the bed room, towards the back," she told him. "I think he over dosed."
The paramedics nodded to her and took the stretcher and some equipment with them to the back of the apartment. Within moments they had Deidara on the stretcher, with a portable heart rate moditor hooked open so that they can keep tack of his heat beat. As they were going back out the door one of the paramedics stopped at Orihime. "The doctors at the hospital are going to have a few questions to ask. Do you have a way of getting there? If not, you can ride with us as long as you stay out of the way."
"I would like to ride, yes." She nodded, grabbing her purse. The look of worry on her face. "He's going to be alright?"
"We don't know." The medic said as he gestured to her to follow him down the hall towards the elevator were the other two medics were waiting with Deidara. "We don't know what he took, or how much he took, or how long it's been. But at least he's still breathing. We just need to keep him that way until we get to hospital."
"I have it here!" she held out the bottle she took from his hand as she followed them frantically.
"Keep hold of the that." The medic said as they stepped into the elevator. "That doctors are the ones who are going to be needing it. Our job is to just keep him alive until we get to the hospital."
She nodded and put the bottle in her purse. She looked at Deidara, unsure of what to do. She felt so guilty. If she hadn't asked him to try and quit none of this would be happening.

They reached the ground floor and the paramedics rushed Deidara over to the ambulance truck that was waiting outside. After loading him in, one of the medics helped Orihime in and had her sit over to the side where she would be out of the way. They drove off towards the hospital, sirens blaring. The medics spent the whole time moditoring Deidara's condition. They especially paid attention to the heart moditor.
They arrived at the hospital with the only thing happening was Deidara's heart becoming slightly irregular. They unloaded him and rushed him into the ER of the hospital where doctors and nurses were waiting. One nurse told Orihime to go to the waiting room and someone will be with her shortly. An hour past and a doctor in a lab coat approached her. "Are you the girlfriend of the young man that overdosed?"
Orihime stood up quickly. "Yes, yes I am. Tell me doctor, is he going to be alright?" She kept her hands clasped tightly together in order to keep them from violently shaking.
"He's stable now. We had to pump his stomach to get the rest of the drugs that haven't been absorbed into his body out. It turns out you found him not long after he took them. What I need to know is what kind of drugs did he take."
Orihime dug in her purse and handed the doctor the bottle. "This is what I found in his hand when I got home."
The doctor took the bottle and knock some pills into his hand to look at them. "These are some pretty high grade pain killers. They're legal but are often sold on the black market and the streets because they can give a good buzz. How long have you known about his drug addiction and has he been known to take anything else?"
"He just recently told me...." She lowered her head. "He was doing Escatsy. I had asked him to try and stop ...I ...I didn't know this would happen if he did..."
"He went cold turkey without checking into rehab?" The doctor arched a brow as he put the pills back into the bottle. "That's pretty dangerous. His system could have shut down is his body was too dependant on the drugs. Also the chances of falling off the band wagon and over dosing are very high as well as you can see. He should have went to at rehab center within 24 hours of quiting."
This was all her fault. After hearing such news, Orihime didn't know how to respond. She just lowered her head again, feeling horrible.
The doctor noticed her expression and placed a hand on her shoulder. "It's not your fault. You did a good thing in making him realize that he should quit. You just didn't know what would happen if he didn't go the rehab rout and no one can blame you for that. We have him in a room now. He's still unconcious but you can go be with him now. I'll have to hold onto these though." He held up the bottle of pills a little.
"Thank you doctor," she replied looking up at him. "Yes, I'd like to be with him right now."
"Follow me then." He turned and led Orihime down the hall to some rooms that were further away from the chaos from the ER. "When he comes to, just push that button next to the bed. I have somethings I wish to descuss with him."
Orihime gave a simple nod. "I'll be sure to do so," she responded. This was good, because she really wasn't sure what she was supposed to say to Deidara once he would wake up anyway.
In the room, Deidara was laying on the bed. Over his mouth and nose was and oxygen mask, so that he could breathe easier. The usual IV was in his arm to make sure he got enought fluids. There was a small clamp on his finger connected him to the heart rate monitor. He was the only patient in the room, so the only sounds were the steady beeping from the monitor and his breathing.
The doctor held the door open for Orihime. Once she was inside, he said, "I'll leave you two alone." And with that he left.
Seeing him laying there in such a helpless state only made Orihime feel any more guilty than before. Despite what the doctor said, she still believed that she knew that it was her fault that he ended up like this. She sat down in the chair that was in the room and stayed there still and quiet.
Time went on. It was almost two hours when Deidara started to stir and crack open his eyes. Letting out a groan he turned his head to the side and opened his eyes a bit. Everything was blury but he could recognize the orange color of Orihime's hair. What the hell happened? he wondered. "Hime..." He breathed out as he tried to focus his eyes.
Orihime hadn't been in a sleep, but a daze when she heard him speak to him. She jerked her body to focus on him and bit her bottom lip nervously.
His eyes focused a little more as he looked around a bit. It was then that it accord to him that he was in a hospital room. What happened that got him here was a blank. "Wha... What happened yeah?" He asked softly. He was still tired and didn't know if he could stay up long.
"You...took some pills," she answered. Answer questions, that was something she could do. Seeing him there, it made her voice choke, and her body shiver. The last time she had seen someone lying in a hospitol was when her brother was in that car accident.
Pills? Then he remembered what happened, and a feeling of guilt came over him. "I ODed didn't I yeah?" It was the only way he could explan why he was in the hospital.
"Yes, you did," she reponded. "I....Dei...I'm sorry."
Deidara arched a brow at this. He was the one that overdosed because of his own actions, not her's. He reached a hand up he pulled down the breathing mask so that he can talk better. "What are you sorry about? I was the one who took the pills yeah."
"But you wouldn't have if I hadn't asked you to stop...."
"Don't blame yourself just because I did something stupid yeah. You didn't shove the pills down my throat and you didn't know this would happen yeah. It probably would have happened even if you didn't ask me to stop. It was only a matter of time anyway yeah."
"I have to call the doctor in...He wanted to ask you some questions." The button was closer to the bed so Orihime had to get up to where she was sitting to walk over there to press it.
Deidara watched her as she got up to push the button. As her hand started to pull away, he reached out and grabbed it. All he wanted to do now was hold her, but he couldn't with the bars up on the bed, so he'll have to settle with hold her hand.
Orihime grasped his hand as her eyes started to tear up. "I'm sorry," she said again. It's all she could still think of saying to him. She used her free hand to wipe her eyes.
"Don't. It's not your fault so there is no need to appologize yeah." He lightly pulled on her hand so that he could draw her closer. "You didn't force me to take the pills. I did that all on my own yeah. If anyone is at fault, it's me yeah."
"I still should've.....done something. Take some sort of precaution. Looked for help sooner..."
"You didn't need too yeah." He reached up and gently touched her cheek. "Even if I was in rehab, there will always be that chance that I will fall off the wagon again yeah. It's something that I'm going to have to live with for the rest of my life because I was addicted."
Just then there was a knock at the door and the doctor poked his head in. "Good, you're still awake. I have to say, you're one of the lucky ones." He came into the room and went over to Deidara. "I have a few things I need to discuss with you, and some options you might want to consider." He looked Orihime and smiled softly. "I'm sorry miss, but I'm afraid I'm going to have to talk with him in private. Would you mind stepping outside for a bit?"
Orihime gave a slight nod towards the doctor. She lingered in his touch as she pulled from Deidara. "I'll be back soon." Now would be a good time to go to the bathroom.
Deidara didn't want to let her go but reluctantly did so, so that she could leave. The doctor waited for her to leave the room before turning back to him.
