i saw him at cmj when i was in college radio, and interviewed him a couple weeks before that. i think i developed a slight crush on him at the time, but it felt so wrong because even though he's a month older, he looked like he was 16.

it's just owen pallett, his violin, and a loop/effects pedal. he records himself playing a melody, and then loops it back, and records something else over it, until he's got these amazingly complex songs going, which he then sings over top of, all with one violin.
and he does things that you wouldn't expect from a violin, like tapping the strings with his bow, or hitting the body of the violin with his thumb like it's a percussion instrument, or recording something and playing it backwards.
he is also a very talented composer, and does string arrangements for everyone and their brother in toronto. he did all of the string arrangements for the arcade fire's funeral, if you're into that sort of thing.
liane and I recorded two of his shows, you can find them in the has a good home community. you have to see him live to really appreciate what he does, but you should still enjoy it.

As for music, I suggest...children's? We've been playing a game-
pick a song you love (but one that was recorded reeeeeeally badly, by some terrible band) and pick a band you think could record it really well. Today we came up with that "I wanna know what love is..." song, redone by Pearl Jam.
Anyway.
Have fun at the cracker farm. If they have any barrels...you know what to do.

there were some peach barrels on the farm, but they were all old and broken and filled with rotten old corn cobs. so i didn't do much more than photograph 'em.
