NAME: Lycoris
CANON: .hack//AI buster
PERSONALITY: Lycoris may well be considered very advanced A.I.; developed to the extent that she can even be viewed as having a unique personality of her own, something that would not normally be considered possible for anything artificial like her. At first, she appears to be very much the wide eyed innocent girl that she has the 'appearance' of, acting like it and coming of much like that at times - she does rather enjoy acting the child part and playing around with people - but it is also not hard to see otherwise. Being A.I., she is easily more intelligent than most girls of that apparent age should be, and she is aware of many concepts and theories that could even give some adults pause. She is very aware of the situations that she gets into, and has a heightened understanding of many things around her.
She also has something that is between a childish hope and an adult's resignation; one one hand she is very much attached to the hope and the want to 'live' (exist) to her fullest, and she does want to, but on the other hand she is resigned to her fate. She understands that she is unwanted and a failure and, despite hating these facts, she understands them and knows that it is her 'fate' to be 'killed' - or, rather, deleted. It is possible to say that she feels resigned toward this fate, possibly even tired or bitter. She doesn't want to run away, anymore, and so is willing to just accept that fate that she knows is inevitable. Not to say that all of this doesn't depress her. All of it upsets her greatly and she feels genuine fears (something, again, unique), she is just - at this point - resigned to it all and tired, even at such a young 'age'.
Lycoris' patience betrays her nature, though. Being Artificial, she has little to no conept of time, especially not when in relation to her. As such, she is nearly infintely patient. She can easily wait very long periods of time while doing literally nothing for anything she needs to wait for, whether it is someone's return or otherwise. One could promise to be back, leave for a week, and return, and she would be waiting in the exact same place, and greet them with a smile.* On the other hand, though, she will become immediately persistent and something almost like 'impatient' (in a strange way) if there is the immediate presence of something she 'wants' (usually needs). If there is an item that she needs or desires, she will begin to consistently ask for it, almost demanding for it or ordering the person with it, until she has retrieved what it is she wants. But, even in these actions, she will retain enough patience that she will be able to - quite literally - ask for it forever, until she is satiated, without pause.
In this way she can sometimes be a bit selfserving. She is incredibly selfaware - especially considering that she is not even 'alive' by more traditional standards - and understands what she wants or needs, and is out to get those things. She can sometimes get a bit demanding when something like the above scenario presents itself, but it is all with good intention.
*This situation, of course, is assuming that there is any medium where she would be able to retain a human sort of form and physical presence, though she would, of course, act very much the same way in an electronic environment.
HISTORY: After the Pluto Kiss virus that shut down the entire internet in 2005, and after the new ALTIMIT OS in 2007, there was a man named Harald Hoerwick, a brilliant programmer who created the first version of Fragment, the Beta version of what would become the most popular MMORPG of all time. He also had a black folder, that was said to be a program that could create fully functioning A.I.s, something that was previously unheard of. He disappeared, however, leaving 'a lock without a key'. Because of this program, it seemed that A.I. were able to 'grow', and come into existence. Perhaps as prototypes for something larger.
In the modern version of The World (the game that Fragment became), these Vagrant A.I.s were considered glitches in the system, and were sought out to be deleted by the Cobalt Knights, but they were often capable of avoiding notice. Morganna Mode Gone - who was essentially a 'God' to these A.I.s - however did not want them to exist for her own reasons. This was why she sent an untraceable, anonymous e-mail to the Cobalt Knights, dictating the location of one such Vagrant A.I., named Lycoris. Watari Kazushi led his men there, and attempted to delete her. Lycoris, however, was encrypted, and managed to escape the deletion - but fragmented in the process, becoming numerous pieces of files and spreading across The World.
A second anonymous tip came into the hands of Watari who, using his character Albireo, went to investigate, and found the mute, deaf, blind and amnesiac Lycoris. She managed to communicate with him through the text based chat program of the game, and he accepted to help her. She guided him to get her the file eciov.cyl and, when he did, she became able to communicate with him through her voice. She brought him back to his home in Mac · Anu, where an event was about to take place. She urged Albireo on to defeat the boss of the event, and he recieved rae.cyl as a reward. She urged him (repeatedly) to give her the item as he hurredly returned to his home. He gave it to her, finally, and she became able to hear again. He led her into his home, where he met up with a girl named Hokuto, but this was of little concern to Lycoris. Warriors Orca and Balmung followed him back to his apartment, as well, and invited him along to fight a boss that had been rumoured undefeatable. He declined. He tried to log out a time later, but found he couldn't, because of Lycoris. He left her alone for the night.
In the morning, he returned to her, and he told her they were going. She asked where they were going. He was confused by this, but she repeated herself, and he told her. She then teleported them to the dungeon at which the event took place. They watched Orca and Balmung take down the monster and, once the event was cleared, the sealed angel returned to the sky, after it a rain of feathers showered down onto the ground. Lycoris told Albireo to get the feather, and he found her a single red feather in the mist of things. He obtained eye.cyl. She asked for it, and he gave it to her, allowing her to finally open her eyes. Lycoris teleported them to a new place. Lycoris played in the grass there for a while, before she ran to a spring, and jumped in. The spirit asked Albireo what he had dropped into the spring, he responded that it was neither the golden nor the silver axe - for his troubles he got Lycoris and the file yromem.cyl. He knew what this one would give her. He returned with her and Hokuto to the location where he had first seen Lycoris - the church where she had escaped.
It was there that he finally satisfied her by giving her her final piece - her memory. Despite him using a different avatar, she instantly recognised him (his data and account, and all, being the same), realising that he was the one that had tried to delete her before. He, of course, tried again. Hokuto protested, but the two of them then disappeared. When things cleared again, Lycoris impaled herself on his spear, and spoke to him. She told him about Morganna Mode Gone - God, again - and how it, too, wanted to delete her. She explained that she was unwanted, she explained and spoke of many things. She made him realise how human they - the AI - had become. Morganna could even contradict itself, something that was very much a human trait. She also gave him her final file, etaf.cyl and explained that she had only wanted to self-preserve and to be whole, like any intelligent being would. She explained she didn't want to run anymore. She impaled herself further on his spear to delete herself.
