There must be something this year that has folks going back to their religios roots. I do not remember some of my friends and loved ones ever going to certain religious holidays. Kind of interesting that in as many days, three people I know have gone back to visit their religious roots for whatever reason. I joked often with one of them that the ( Read more... )

For me, Passover is the only religious-like thing I do all year. And Alaron can attest to the fact that our seder is far from "strict" in any respect, lol.

I do it because it's a family thing. I don't go to the second seder (the night after), I don't do anything involving going to synagogue or anything, but this is more like a family tradition for me.

Also, the godkids are going to Hebrew day school, so it's exciting for them to use all the stuff they've learned about the holiday. And it's fun to see what I remember as well. :-)

I like to call Passover the Jewish Thanksgiving (which, in a big way it is), so it's more like another family get-together for me rather than a religious event.

The religion angle comes from more of my father's side of the family than my mother's side. The ethics that were taught to me through CCD classes as a child stuck over the years, and helped me become a better person, to a point. But there also came a point when I realized I had a free will, and wanted to think beyond the bounds of the Catholic faith. It is structured, it has its flaws, and can provide a decent guideline if not taken overly seriously ( ... )

Religion is odd. I never really got into my Catholic roots all that much, I sang in the choir at church and went to CCD classes but it was more of the habit thing rather than something I actually put myself into. Even now as a practicing Pagan I don't want to say that I'm reluctant to practice every day but rather that it feels moreso that there is a time and place for everything. I don't go to church all that often, but when I do, I got because I feel a deep need to either havfe som tranquility and reason as well as have someone to listen to me, or I meditate in my comfortable space. Both ways help to give me a peace of mind and with both there is openness about them. I know that when I really need to I will practice either religion that is comfortable and that no matter what anyone else says I will always be welcomed by whatever higher power I am seeking for in perfect love and trust.

I think that we need to bear in mind what religion is to some people. It's not just a 'practice' it's also a mentality. I think what makes a person a certain faith is how they feel ( ... )
