Adulthood and Birthdays

In some ways I am still very much a child. One of those is the fact that I love my Birthday to be widely acknowledged and made much of by my friends and family. I get a warm and fuzzy feeling from being inundated by happy Birthday posts on Facebook, even if it's just those two words from "friends" I never otherwise speak to. The self-effacing act is a hard piece of socialization to shake. I catch myself doing it in the grocery store, of all things, when it's busy; the "oh, sorry, don't mind me, just slipping through this gap here, sorry, I'll be gone in a sec" slightly hunched posture and even slightly altered facial expression. And that's a situation that's MUCH less socially fraught.

You're working on resolving a conflict between what you've been socialized into and what you actually believe. It's okay for that to be a work in progress. It doesn't make you a hypocrite, or self-aggrandizing, or immature or vain.
