The self-effacing act is a hard piece of socialization to shake. I catch myself doing it in the grocery store, of all things, when it's busy; the "oh, sorry, don't mind me, just slipping through this gap here, sorry, I'll be gone in a sec" slightly hunched posture and even slightly altered facial expression. And that's a situation that's MUCH less socially fraught.
You're working on resolving a conflict between what you've been socialized into and what you actually believe. It's okay for that to be a work in progress. It doesn't make you a hypocrite, or self-aggrandizing, or immature or vain.
