You say that because the animals look dead and the dogs look freaked out? Or is it something else entirely? ;)

Yeah, the animals in a pile look dead. If the food a is a sacrifice, as explodinglemur suggests, the the animals are not part of it because there are no blood stains on the ground.

But there are 2 jugs (of poison) behind the food.

Yeah, but why would the animals have climbed on top of each other before croaking? They'd have to have been piled there on purpose after they were dead, which suggests they were a sacrifice and were simply slaughtered elsewhere.

This portrayal of the transition of the Nassau Grand-Duchy under Prussian rule early in the 19th century, shows a dark and foreboding scene. The display is that of angst directed at the monarchies from the common worker ( ... )

Sorry, not much to go on, so I went with the Flemish angle. Having the date of the painting would have been useful...

The statue covering it's self is probably half of an Adam & Eave set, where they eat of the fruit of knowledge and know shame at their nakedness. Not many statues have that kind of pose. Notice also the railing is crubling.

These two elements alone suggest decay and falling into disfavor or God (specifically Jahova)

Peacock might suggest vanity.

I think all in all we're looking at a cautionary tail about excess. Not sure, I only get half an hour on my lunch break. Not nearly enough time to delve.

I don't know about you, but I always stack myself before dying. With a kangaroo. No, wait, that's a young buck. Oh, and a lobster. Can't forget the lobster.

But I'm not a swan, so who knows what its motives are?
