Would You Trade That Heart of Gold For a Minute in My Skin?
Chapter 3, Weightless

------

Alex hasn't left his apartment in a week. He'd taken two weeks off of work, it was supposed to be when he and Rian were having two weeks full of sex and alone time. It had been the perfect backfire plan. He hasn't seen people in a week and he's only heard calls from friends wondering where he'd disappeared to.

Pete alone has called his cell phone sixteen times in the past seven days. Alex doesn't mind it, the only reason he calls is because he's concerned about Alex. He's left numerous messages with his calls, all of them asking if he's alright and letting him know that Pete's there for him if he needs him.

Alex doesn't even know what exactly he's been doing with his time. He read for two days, finishing his entire stack of books from the library. He doesn't even like reading. Afterwards, he'd watched the television. Over four days, he's nearly watched 35 hours of television alone.

Usually when Alex feels emotional, he'd always turned to music. He'd write and play songs until he felt better, as if it was the only thing that could get him out of his mood. Over the week though, he hadn't felt a single muse, letting his guitar collect dust in the corner of his room.

He's watching a rerun of Friends when it hits him. Within a moment he's grabbing his phone. He hears the familiar hello before they finally realize who's calling, "Alex!"

"Hey Pete," his voice is shaking, afraid that he's mad at him, "I know I've been a complete asshole and not returned like, any of your calls, but do you think maybe you wanna hang out tonight or do something? I have got to get myself out of this fucking place before I go insane."

Alex can't help but feel as though it's a bad idea. After all, last time he'd gone out with Pete, he'd seen so many couples together that night, it broke him into what he'd been for the past week.

"Hmm," Pete thinks, sighing deeply, "I can go with you to the club for a while or something, but I've gotta work tomorrow so I have to leave early. I'll go with you for show or something; you know, so you don't look desperate. Even though you are," Pete taunts.

Alex is happy enough that Pete is free, even if only for a little while. They get to the club, the place feeling more refreshing and welcoming now that Alex has had time to attempt to regain himself. "You going to be able to handle this?" Pete asks with a teasing smile.

"I can do anything I want," Alex says reassuringly, trying to convince himself of that very thought. He and Pete go inside, trying to find somebody for Alex to lose his mind with for a night.

They have a few fruitless attempts before Pete has to leave. Alex aimlessly wanders around the place, talking and attempting to flirt with various girls, being rejected every single time. He recognizes a kid at the bar, the one that Pete had been with last week. "Hey, you're friends with Pete right? You're..."

"Zack," the kid finishes, "You're Alex right?" Alex nods and Zack motions for him to sit down, "So what are you doing here tonight? Were you here with Pete? He stopped by to say hey, but that was a while ago."

Alex nods again, "Yeah, I'm just trying to find somebody for the night. Sounds whore-ish but I just need something to make myself lose these feelings. Me and my boyfriend broke up last week after like, forever."

"Yeah, Pete told me." Zack replies, ordering just a beer for Alex, "I understand. I can set you up if you'd like. I know a dude or two who'd be willing for a quick fuck. Or a chick if you're too upset at dudes for that type of shit right now."

Alex smiles and agrees, he can definitely see why Pete likes this kid, "I just wanna feel weightless, if just for a little bit. I'll take what I can get."

Zack smiles back at Alex and gets up, "Wait here and I'll get her for you." He leaves and comes back after ten minutes with an average looking girl. She's nothing spectacular, but she's okay. He won't mind her at all.

"I'm Katie," she says as she shakes his hand, "You're Alex?" He nods, "Zack told me what's going on with you and I'm more than willing to help a handsome guy like yourself."

Alex already likes her, "Well then that's perfect. Zack set me up with a beautiful young lady," he lies through his teeth, smiling and pretending to be happy just to get himself something tonight.

Just as Zack promised, everything ends up going perfectly. The girl seems mildly interested in Alex while he pretends to care. They go to her apartment as it's closer to the club than Alex's apartment. He gets what he wants, but he can't say that he feels completely weightless.

He remembers to call Pete the next morning to ask him for Zack's phone number. He lets Zack know that he's grateful for the night. "So how was she?" he asks over the phone.

"She was good, really good. I'm really thankful for that, I mean, you don't even know me very well," Alex lies, frowning at himself in the mirror as he talks. He can barely stand the sight of himself at the moment.

"If you ever need any more help with that sort of shit, just let me know. I know a lot of people," Zack offers, sounding happy to be of help.

"Thanks, I'll let you know if I need any help," Alex replies, knowing that he won't need anymore help from Zack regarding one night stands. He sighs as he hangs up the phone and runs his hand through his hair. He's not going to dream for anybody anymore, he's going to find them himself.
