mitchiemarie. alex finds out that the tooth fairy, the easter bunny and santa claus aren't real.
------
Alex was six. He'd turned six exactly one week ago, the same day that he'd lost his first tooth. He'd gone to school the next day, finding his big kid friends on the playground and running over towards them.
"Guess what," Alex said, trying to build suspense. He'd seen it all over the movies after all, "last night the coolest thing happened to me ever in the whole wide world, it did!"
Jack, his best big kid friend, smiled and hugged Alex, "I love how you sound all British and stuff. It's cute. Except it's not supposed to be cute because boys aren't supposed to be cute." He quickly pushed Alex off of him before any of the other kids saw.
Brendon looked at Jack with puppy dog eyes, "But I'm super duper uper cute cause I'm cute right?" He got a smack to the back of the head from his boy friend Ryan Ross. They weren't really dating because their parents said they were too young for that, but they still decided that they liked each other a lot.
The group was always teased a lot in school, but it only made sense to them. If boys were supposed to like girls, then why did they spend so much time running away from them and making fun of them?
Spencer remembered Alex though, "What happened last night?" The second graders swore that Spencer really was a fourth grader in disguise. He was always so smart and calm and he never got in dirty fights with Brendon like Ryan and Jack did on a daily basis.
"I losted my tooth!" Alex exclaimed and opened his mouth for all to see. Jack gasped as he looked inside his little friend's mouth. He reached inside, seeing if the tooth was laying around anywhere inside.
"It's really gone!" Jack said enthusiastically, proud for his little friend having finally lost his first tooth. He was growing up into a man and quite quickly if Jack did say so himself. Why soon he'd be a huge fifth grader and they'd all sit on their porches, drinking tea and talking about the good old days. Jack didn't want to be old.
"My mum said that the tooth fairy will come and give me money for it," Alex beamed, imagining all the candy that he could buy with the money. His mouth began to water as he imagined, only to be brought by to earth by Jack's loud yelping about his shoe being drooled on.
Ryan snorted, "The tooth fairy isn't real. None of those people that parents say are real are really real. I saw my mom take my tooth at night and then I saw my dad put presents under the Christmas tree. And they were both hiding eggs around the house during Easter. Parents are liars."
The group of boys gasped, mostly because they all knew that Alex didn't know that they were fake. They always made group sacrifices for him; such as agreeing with Ryan on how parents always lied about those sort of things.
"But they're real! My mum and pop say that they are!" Alex said, tears biting at the corners of his eyes. They threatened to fall, the only thing stopping him was Jack hugging him for support.
"Of course they're real Alex," Jack told him.
"He has to grow up some time Jack," Ryan replied, "He can't go to first grade without knowing these things."
Jack and Ryan continued to argue back and forth until they ended up tackling each other only to be separated by the playground monitors. Spencer frowned at them as they were being escorted to the time out zone, Brendon only looking like he was about to cry if he had to be away from Ryan for another minute.
Alex however sat inside the rainbow cover slide and tried to make himself believe that all those people were real.
The next day was Saturday, the best day of the week because he got to be home all day and didn't have to go to school and worry about Ryan telling him that the president wasn't real or that the sky was really purple.
Instead, when he woke up, he saw Jack sitting by his side, "Hi Alex!" He tugged on Alex's arm to get up, "Get up silly, you have to see this!" Alex got up, putting on his Clifford the big red dog slippers on before he followed Jack out his room.
"Looky," Jack said, pointing into the bathroom. Alex didn't expect to see anything, but when he looked inside, Brendon was floating. He had pink wings and was wearing a pink boy's tutu that matched his wings. He had a wand and a crown to match.
He waved to Alex, "Hi Alex! I'm the tooth fairy. I'm real." Then Alex was being pulled down the hallway even more, Jack pulling pretty hard to get Alex to follow him.
They went into Alex's kitchen, only seeing a big fluffy white tail sticking out from behind the fridge door. Spencer's head popped out from behind it, holding colourful eggs in his arms and smiling at Alex. "I'm the Easter Bunny and I'm real. Ryan's stupid." Spencer then hopped over to Alex and Jack and handed them both a brightly coloured egg.
It was chocolate, something that Alex realized when he bit into it. "Thank you Spencer!" He quickly followed Jack into his living room, where Ryan was sitting on his couch dressed like Santa.
"I'm sorry that I'm stupid, but I'm real too. I'm Santa Claus and you've been a good boy so you get whatever you want for Christmas. Except for me, cause I was naughty by lying to you." Ryan looked sad to be admitting that he was wrong, but he also seemed to be sad that he was naughty this year.
"It's okay Ryan," Alex said as he hugged his friend. "For Christmas, I want to be friends with you guys forever!" All of Alex's friends showed up, giving them all one big hug and feeling happiness warm him from all directions.
"Get up Alex," his mum said as she shook him awake, "If you don't get up now, you'll be late for school. Come on, hop to it." He didn't want to get up, his blankets were nice and warm, much different than the cold air in his room.
Alex frowned, realizing that it had all been a dream, but he knew that Santa Claus was always watching you and he knew what Alex wanted for Christmas now. "Mum, are the tooth fairy, the Easter bunny and Santa real?"
"Of course silly boy," she said as she ruffled her son's hair, getting up to leave the room so he could get dressed, "They're all real."
