questions before voicing

I've been trying to ask myself a few questions before I go spouting off about something or making snarky commentary. I'd like to say I apply this equally, but I should admit that I do it most often with people I'm treading on eggshells with ( Read more... )

I got a fortune from a fortune cookie once that I've been carrying around with me for years. It says: "Speak only well of people and you need never whisper." It reminded me of a guy I worked with once, one of the only people in a catty workplace that I noticed pretty much everybody liked and got along with. I observed him, trying to figure out why, and realized that he would never say anything bad about anyone.

Dale Carnegie's badly-named book How To Win Friends and Influence People gives a lot of insight on this, starting with the first few paragraphs. Nobody thinks they are a bad person...
