2) I wholeheartedly believe that Christianity is not a monolithic group. I said "some Christians" in my link text mainly because I don't know what group this is.
I posted this not to criticize Christians, but because I found it remarkable. I do think this particular group of Christians is a extraordinarily daft -- and I do think they are representative of a particular kind of Christian coming to prominence in the US in recent years. But I have great respect for many Christians and Christian groups, and much Christian thought.
Perhaps we have different understandings of what entails an argument, but the piece is much too short to have one. There are a couple of opinions, but those are pretty tame and reside almost wholly in the adjectives "oblivious" and "absurd," which it's hard to disagree with. Whether or not the author of the piece thinks the bible is ridiculous or not is beside the point, as is whether a Christian needs to believe in the bible: These particular people *do* believe, and yet are oblivious to the biblical resonances of their action.
Again, I'm not saying these people represent all Christians, and even the author of the piece calls them "fanatics," which is of course a subset of Christians. And I'll remind you that we first became friends on LJ because we were both Quakers.
