Yeah, I'm not sure it's all as clear-cut as this "Jeff" guy makes it sound. And I think you're spot-on about the differences in deaths for soldiers. (My dad, for instance, couldn't deal with the death of his dog, and couldn't deal with the fact that he couldn't deal with it because he *had* dealt with so much in Vietnam.) Maybe it's a matter of amount/focus? I mean, we've been hammered over the head with his grief this past season, and haven't gotten enough else that feels . . . good. Maybe they just couldn't write this kind of thing as well? I don't know -- I just know that it didn't fully work for me

Generally I'm in the "hated it" camp. I've written a couple of posts on it at encyclops.com if you're at all interested in my take. I like it less now the more I've thought about it, unfortunately; today I don't know if I'd say it "ended well."
I agree with pretty much every point that guy made, even though I know not everyone does.
