Well, yes, having children is beyond question, but keeping and raising them? That is the far more interesting question: at what point does the child's interest outweigh the parents' ? And who decides what is the child's 'interest
( ... )
Without a doubt, there's a lot of tricky ground there -- and a lot of bad parenting around. There's a lot any given society gets to say, and should say, about these issues. What I objected to was where the original question was coming from, which (I think) was way over the line. It seemed like a strident child-free advocate posed it.
Wikipedia has a good entry on childfree: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Child_free. In practice, it's not uncommon for childfree people to be obnoxious about it, pretty much acting like other people's kids are impositions on them when they act like children in public. They also like to criticize parents a lot, and it's not uncommon for them to voice the conclusion that such "bad parents" who, say, let their child spill their soda in a restaurant, should not be allowed to have children.
I will add that not all "childfree" people are like that, of course -- probably just the noisiest ones.
