Laitma August Portfolio Post

Here's my August Portfolio Post!

August was a month where I kind of lost focus and ended up just doodling a lot of random things, and I really slacked off on working on backgrounds/perspective.  I went through a bit of a slump and was otherwise kind of distracted by moving out to college, but still managed to get a lot done, I guess, which was nice!

So to start things off I did a colored sketch of a prefall!Ian~

Some more random pchat/digital doodles...

...And more emo Ians than anyone asked for, honestly.  Sorry.  u_u;;

Then I hit a slump for a while and everything seemed to be fighting me.  Or maybe I was just frustrated with myself for not being able to draw much for several days--non-productivity and artslumps kind of feed on each other that way, haha.

Broke out of the slump kind-of while visiting a friend in B'more!

Felt a lot better after I drew while watching a movie, got a good page of sketches in.

Did a bunch of pchats to round off the night, keep my hand going.
Traumatized Asher???  I'm not sure why hahahaha.

A kinda pissed-looking Seth (but it also doesn't really even look like him)

Aaaaand more bruised Ians, sob

Aaand then I was off to MN!
A study done while waiting at the airport.

Studies done afterward about the 6AM drive up I-495 to the airport.  Driving on the highway is hands-down one of my favorite feelings, sometimes I feel like I enjoy that almost more than the friends I'm usually off to visit, hahahaha.

Aaaand then a lot of doodles to kill the boredom of orientation.  I had a really good drawing day Saturday, too.  :D

(Both Corryn, from Iris.  He demands dynamic poses and perspective so I always enjoy drawing him.)
Still very fond of this bottom picture down here despite wonkiness, hehehe.  <3

Aaaand Bennys because... you guys should all know by now.  u_u

NeZha from Chinese Mythology, testing out a water brush pen!

Looser sketches, not very successful.  Still bored during orientation.

Dizzy (AD) and Ayra (Iris) with scarves.  Guess I'm trying to mentally prep for the cold MN winters, hahahahah!

More Bennys... Notes...

And another oekaki I did a while ago, for another story of mine Cras that I'd really like to get more work done with but that I'm currently really stuck on.

More doodles during class.

Concept for Cras, should go paint it.

Silly doodle of Ayra and Phelan xD

And trying out a new fancy brush pen I got, really loving the feel of it and how fast it makes me work!  :D

Ian forcing a smile, blame Riflow for this HAHAHAHAA.

Brush brush brush~

And meeting up at Metacon with a classmate of mine to sketchbook swap!!  I drew her adorable OC~ <3

And fanart of Semi from Maoh: Juvenile Remix

....And more Ians.

...And even more Ians being gross and sad.  I drew these during an outdoor movie so uhhh yeah they're kinda wonky sorry hahaha.  Just swipin' around with the brush pen.

Also during this month I did a bunch of sketch commissions, so here they are!
Cass for rgeorgeart~

Ivy, Aras, and Sundog for Anqila~

Cicadas (a gift) for a co-worker of mine~

And Haze for Hazel~

And then, finally, 4 hours from the end of Artslam I decided to buckle down and really hash out the thumbs for the first few pages of Iris.  Finished just under midnight and everything's scribbly as heck, but still, I'm very glad I finally, finally, FINALLY bit the bullet and got myself started on this.  Making comics is hard as hell but also immensely rewarding, and I definitely want to be able to continue this soon.

I realized though that I'm really gonna have to tear through my script first and clarify on a lot of things, not to mention re-imagine it all since my goal is a comic and not a novel.  We'll see how that goes, hahahahah!

Still, it promises to be a lot of fun, and I'm really, really, REALLY glad I finally got started.

So, August probably felt the most self-indulgent/mindless of my months of Artslam with the least mental "development" on my stories, but I still accomplished a lot in terms of just finishing up some drawings I liked, tackling a bunch of commissions and starting my Iris comic (AT LAST), so I'm still pretty happy with it!

Overall, Artslam was AMAZING.  This was my first year doing Artslam and I really loved it--it got me thinking about my stories so much, led to a minor-ish breakthrough in Iris, pushed me to work on perspective/backgrounds and just getting me into the habit of drawing every single day, saw me try new mediums and loosen up (even more so than before, hawhaw), and saw probably the greatest achievement of it all, that first page of comic thumbs, which alone would've been worth it all.

I also met such awesome people and got to see so many other cool stories--you guys really made this feel like a community, and I really loved it!

I'll definitely be back next year, and I just wanted to say thank you guys all so much for such a wonderful time!!  :)

As for keeping in touch, uhhh, I mainly only use dA, so here we go:
