I've noticed a general increase over the last few years in the number of people talking about the possibility of a civilization-ending disaster. The crazy breaks-out only when a whole host of other things give rise to the possibility. The froth, if you will, of a stormy sea. Just like with OSC's abortion of a book about an American Civil War, I just have to say that no, things really don't break down along such higher orders of allegiances. Our differences in this envrionment won't persist in an environment where great upheaval or unrest is occurring. Entirely new lines and orders of allegiances and priorties will manifest themselves. That is to say, our current social or political loyalties are largely luxuries of a modern, wealthy, prosperous condition.

I obviously didn't make my transition from semi-serious to absurd joking as clear as I should have. "and I don't mean to suggest a war is by any means likely, when it inevitably comes to pass" was supposed to be a clue that from here on I'm saying ridiculous things.

But I am curious about what is making everyone so crazy. Is it just the depression? Some of it was clearly around before that. There seems to be a general sense that certain aspects of our society simply don't work any more.

I think the information age has something to do with it. The feedback of 'celebrity lies to people', 'people believe it a little', 'celebrity uses this as support for the next level of crazy' can happen faster since news comes so much faster than it used to via newspaper.
