Once again a larger apartment is available in my building (next door to my current apt.).
The landlord has offered it to me.

He says I am a "great tenant"  *blush* awe shucks ... I am pretty self sufficient and fix things myself.

Pros:

Larger !!! Would have room for my couch and my bed could go into the nook out of the way. I would have more of an ( Read more... )

I'd be down with a lager apartment, but it better be fully stocked at all times.

I'd write out a full list of pros and cons.

I've been to the Hiawatha lofts, and they're pretty awesome -- but [allegedly] it's a "soft use" facility and some of the artists I know who live there aren't as happy as they could be. The light is good, the spaces are small (but better than most studios), the list is long, and the rent is variable depending on what you make. Even with my salary, I wasn't able to get a better deal than a studio apartment. That's kind of a big deal to me -- I want to think I can get more in an "artist assisted" living space. For example, my commute time would have been doubled and I'd still be afraid to get the place dirty or that I would break one of the many rules.

And it could take years.

Besides, don't you have some kickass work space you share with someone?! That place is far better than Hiawatha, from the pics you've put up.

YES ... my studio rocks. And I hate rules. Even with Soil at the TK it can feel a little oppressive ... we are always getting scolded for one thing or another.
Granted the salt from the DK Pan show WAS a legitimate beef (but what a great show it was !!!!)

The spaces at the Hiawatha are beautiful and cheaper and bigger than the 350sq ft hobbit hole I currently live in. But as you point out. My work space is big and awesome.

And yeah ... it could take years.

I guess it comes down to space vs aesthetics ... and $$ ....

and beer ...

AND beer. I'll bet in that big beautiful workspace of yours, you could stash a couple of kegs. Now THAT'S a workspace...

825 all told is getting pretty cheap in this town. Still low rent. The things you have to think about, depending upon your lifestyle is the transfer of your utilities (electric) or phone (if you have landline dsl or cable) and their "installation fees" or prorated use of stuff as you moved out" and the extra cost that may cause to move things. Otherwise, 105 for more room isn't a bad price, and your rent is still pretty low. Then again, the character can have a big effect on comfort. Looking at 'blah' every day, even in a bigger space can be worse than 'cute' in a smaller one. It's a hard decision.

Good .. thanks for the price check, good to know. When I was looking I saw a great place in Renton .. a big and modern apartment. BUT $865 plus utilities would push it to a grand a month. As I looked on I opted for character and location (Wallingford 3 blocks off of 45th and 1 block from the 40th street bus lines). If I wanted to pay much less that $650 I was looking at really ugly places in the South end with questionable neighbors (the online reviews consistently spoke of drug dealers and obnoxious neighbors plus bad managers).

The only utility I would have to move is cable tv since I am wireless with phone and internet.

So .. even though this one was just too ugly for me, the one coming up isn't and when it does I am going to jump on it without hesitation!
