Why I can't play GTA

So last night, I decided to check out GTA. I figure, it looks like fun, I had a decent amount of fun playing Vice City, so might as well. That, and I really want to play online with all my friends from work. Well, apparently I can't play it for two reasons

I've been online a few times playing. I'm not good yet since I JUST started playing and I'm still freaked out by the controls. So yea GTA4 is very realistic- I did not find that out till I did the tutorial for online and I had to go shoot the other players. So I did what I always do when I cant get a good far away distance shot. I walked right up on them. Doing it point blank felt really odd because it was so realistic. I did not like the feel of it- at all. So I will be doing most of my shooting from as far away as possible.
No nightmares though.
