I ditched Facebook a while back - "deleted" my account and everything, because even if Zuckerberg won't commit to letting me leave his service, I can. Everything about how that company is run makes my skin crawl. The sneaky privacy invasions, the "well, we'll fix it after people complain" mindset, the pandering to advertisers instead of accommodating its userbase, the way FB decided what I saw on my feed instead of me - EVERYTHING about that company creeps me the fuck out ( ... )

You're absolutely right about all of your concerns. The problem is that Facebook has reached critical mass: people have gotten their parents to join, and you can bet they're not going to try to figure out another social network, so it's Facebook or nothing for a lot of people.

My age bracket (which I've noticed have become smaller - generations are now more like four or five years, divided by how we use technology) is a strange one. We grew up with email but never really embraced it, but Twitter is too short-form. Tumblr is too much Internet, but phone calls are too personal. Facebook is an ideal middle ground because it came into being while we were in college - we were the first group to use it, along with all of our friends, when you still needed a .edu account to sign up.

Of course, I always have the option to walk away, but the sacrifice would be greater than for someone older or younger (who have already rejected it in favor of Twitter).
