I can't find the interview just now, but I believe it was Mark Gatiss who once told an interviewer that they put all this time and effort into crafting the cases for Sherlock, but in the end all people want to see is Sherlock... being Sherlock

Just watched it. It felt like they tried to make the garnish the main event.

I've had a bit to think, and it's really the drunken case-solving where they lost me. It was one step too far into self-indulgence and/or fan service, I can't tell which.
