The two samples i have spent the last month on are not big enough to run ( Read more... )

*poke*

sorry i didn't call you this summer. i was experiencing field work in the wild west while you were in scenic woods hole.

will you be out here again anytime soon?

also, what is it that you're working on? i gather its oceans and critters and goop and whatnot, but i'm also a geology major so we should talk rocks!

Tis okay that you weren't around. My week in Cape Cod turned out marvellous, if i sounded desperate for human interaction in that phone message it's because most of the time NJ was... less than fun. i have no idea if/when i'll be back east, the time now is all about applying for grad schools and such (i.e., i don't know where i'll be next year at all).

Where was your field work? (Wild west, did you do field camp already?!)

My project was "The Paleoventilation of the South Pacific" which turned out well... too well, and i'm now a bit overwhelmed with the whole 'write another abstract and present this thing well at ASLO and remember absolutely everything you've read about carbon cycling ever.' i can forward you the paper version if you like, but basically i picked a lot of forams, got radiocarbon dates, and made a graph that showed ocean circ. during the last glacial maximum was even slower than some thought.

Woods Hole is awesome, so I'm glad you had a good time. I spent a weekend out there trying to run samples, but the instrument I was supposed to use broke, so instead I learned how to fix it.

I was out in Yellowstone collecting samples for my summer job. We were extracting lipids from bacterial streamer communities in the hot springs doing community analysis on them and getting delta 13C values for the specific lipids. Basically stuff involving carbon cycling but on a smaller scale than your project. I'll be going back out west this January to the Las Vegas area for field camp.

I'd be psyched to see your paper. It's exciting to see what people I know are doing, especially when I can actually understand the science. Good luck with the ASLO meeting (is that the one in Hawaii -- lucky!!) and with grad schools and all that. Where are you thinking of applying?

Yellowstone! What a great place to do field work!

As of now, i'm completely undecided about grad schools. i simply haven't decided what sort of research i'd like to do, so narrowing that down to a few places to apply isn't working so well (i like that my profs told me to read through the literature & see what piques my curiousity--problem being almost everything does for a bit, then i change my mynd). i'm also thinking of taking time off in between/working for awhile, as being out of debt would be fun.

Yup, ASLO is in Hawai'i--i got officially registered last week, it was exciting.

Also, this is way off topic, but you were Guy Fox Day, right? (i have the england vs. england snapshot on my wall, one of my friends commented on it the other day)
