Try getting copies of the syllabus from either course and bringing them with you when you meet with the Dean and see if any of those classes will count given that your understanding of Old English. With that said, there is some benefit from studying the history behind the English language's development...I just am not the one to support that side given I forgot most of the stuff from that particular UW class. I just know that the old English major on UW that I was in used to make History of the English language and Structures class were required at one point that it didn't occur to me that it would be missing from the new major requirement.

Were you a Linguistics focus? Because it is for that English Major, but I am a Creative Writing focus, and its not for that one. And then the teacher who taught History of the language retired and they never got anyone new to teach it. So its only available long distance now. Grrr.
