Steampunk Sewing Project Update

Jun 14, 2012 10:31

Well, progress continues apace.

Between some lucky yard sale finds last weekend, and some time spent down in the workshop, I've accumulated a fair number of new accessories for the outfit:  a new necklace, a satchel, a cool little reticule, a hand mirror, a sheath for my pocketknife, some watch fobs, and some "airship captain" medals.  Since I've already blathered about them at length (and posted pictures) over on CrazyWithKeyboard, I'll just point you in that direction for those details.

Meanwhile, I've gotten the jacket and skirt both cut out, and I've begun assembly on the skirt.  Which is to say that I've sewn all of the front gores together and all of the back gores together.  Now I need to finish those seams, and then I can sew on the pockets (I dug out my "mucking great pocket of holding" pattern, the one that will hold two cans of soda, for this), then sew the front to the back.  Then gather the top into the waistband and add elastic, and then...lots of pleats, as I pleat a 10" ruffle onto the bottom of the skirt.  Hopefully that won't drive me too crazy.

I think (hope) the jacket will go together quickly.  The only thing I see taking a while is gathering the upper sleeves into the cuffs and onto the body of the jacket.  But I actually like gathering--it's almost a zen thing for me--so it won't be bad.

And then I need to tackle the blouse.  At least, for that, I have a safe fall-back position, in that I can always wear my tuxedo shirt if need be.  I just wanted something a little girlier, is all.

And then, if there's time, I'd like to make a new skirt for my western steam outfit, but I don't know how that's going to work out.  Playing it by ear, for now.
